Real Time Spam Analysis
SpamAssassin is a mail filtering software program we have installed on our server that aims to detect the
probability of a message being considered as SPAM via content matching methods. Additionally, it will also
perform checks against blacklists and other online databases. The most popular program of it’s kind, it is now
part of the Apache foundation, the world’s most prevalent server software.
How does SpamAssassin work?
Emailer Go has installed and incorporated SpamAssassin on our mail servers empowering you to submit your
message for real time analysis with a single click. Once submitted, we’ll actually send your message as an email
to one of our POP3 email accounts where it will be analyzed by SpamAssassin. The results will then be
presented to you, including descriptions of failures and suggestions for improvement, allowing you to make
corrective edits to your message then submit it for further testing.
SpamAssassin assigns penalty points for each rule breeched. The higher the final score on a message, the more
likely the message will be deemed as SPAM. Each Contact you send a message to, will most likely have a copy
of SpamAssassin set up on their server, usually set up by the host, to intervene, process and often delete
messages before they ever reach the recipient’s inbox. Each installation can be configured to the administrator’s
own standards, with the default and most often used Maximum Allowed Score being 7. That is, if you submit your
message for testing, and receive a score of 7 or higher, then it is very unlikely your email will filter through to your
Contact’s inboxes. You should aim for a score of 2 or less.
You should also note, that your email address (the email address you use as the From Email address when
sending a campaign) develops a reputation of it’s own in each installed copy of SpamAssassin installed on
servers around the world. If your messages often fail the SpamAssassin test, your reputation decreases in what
SpamAssassin calls the AutoWhiteList (AWL). If on the other hand, you rarely or never trigger the SPAM flag,
your reputation in the AutoWhiteList increases and your email address incurs little or no penalty at all. Remember
that each server on the Internet has their own system administrators, and they can, and often do, configure their
own penalties and rules for scrutinizing incoming email. We are running the default configuration so you should
this tool as a general guide to good practice.

How do I use SpamAssassin?
When we say “analyse with a single click”, we mean it literally. While composing your message, you have the
ability to promptly and repeatedly submit it for Spam Analysis then examine results without ever leaving the
screen.
