The State Security Office (ÁVH) was established in 1948 in Hungary to function as the secret police and "fist of the working class", protecting detention camps and organizing interrogations that involved torture. Methods included moral and physical brutality, sleep deprivation, no food or water, and electric shocks. In 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, the ÁVH fought alongside Soviet troops but the anger of the people turned against them and some officers were lynched, leading to the breaking up of the secret police organization.
