Ashes
1. AshesBy Corinna Faith
Representation
3846195173990This film is representing broken family life in Britain, particularly father and son relationship. It also represents death of a family member and journey as the father and son travel up to Liverpool to scatter the grandad’s ashes. More and more families in Britain are breaking up and many children lose their relationships with either their mum or dad which makes this film significant to the real world.
Institution
Ashes is British film made in London by the company, “Film London” which is aided and funded by the UK Film Council.
Values
3718560548640This film seems to have a very low budget as the camera techniques and editing are very basic and the camera quality isn’t great. The producers have used true characters which gives that sense of truth and reality about the film. The locations are true which will make the audience believe the story and engage with the characters. The lighting in the film is natural which shows the true representation being showed by Corinna Faith and the audience can see that it is a low budget film, however has a strong sense of reality.
Audience
I believe the target audience for this film would be broken families in Britain, especially broken father and son relationships.
Language
3718560354965The mother of the boy doesn’t show her face in the film which connotes she doesn’t have any relevance to the kid’s granddad. She might not want to be a part of any the father’s life anymore so she just leaves her son to his father and walks off. The father wears a Liverpool shirt to travel to Liverpool which represents his father’s background and life. Liverpool is probably where the granddad grew up and you can see the importance of this by the son wearing a Liverpool shirt.
Ideology
4175760238760The preferred reading by Corinna Faith is to portray broken families in Britain and how death can bring some family members back together again. In this film, the death of the boy’s granddad brings him and his father together again but you can see straight away that it is awkward for the pair of them. Their relationship is more like a friendship rather than father and son.
Narrative
4027170387350Ashes has a clear beginning, middle and end and it tells the audience a story of a father and son relationship who don’t live with each other and rarely see each other. The film tells the story of death of a family member bringing the father and son together again and remoulding their bond again.
Genre
The genre of ashes is Drama which has been improvised slightly.
