I annotated existing TV soap magazines and made a flat plan for my own to work from. I annotated this too to show how I used existing conventions to put it together.
3. The header shows why the
magazine is best for buy
and most people now have
Sky or Virgin so it is aimed
at a wide audience.
Advertisements linking to
brand loyalty and trust.
The masthead is large
and has the word ‘week’
supporting it beneath. It
uses an ‘&’ to condense
the space it takes up.
The masthead gives
information about the
magazines website and
time it covers.
Main image /feature is large
and overlaps the stars head,
white text with black
outline.
All the stars have eye
contact with the reader,
and their costumes give
an indication of the
programme they are
part of.
The strap line uses the
same fonts as the
masthead however it is
yellow and the
masthead is white. The
magazine follows a
clear colour scheme.
Contradicting and
contrasting features, will
make people want to read
them.
Misfits could be in
yellow due to the
connotations of the
programme.
4. Headings in bold,
sub-headings same
font – black.
Star has a strict
identity which
audiences can
follow, e.g. hair and
black coat
“Is there a life after
Doctor Who?”
creates a story for
the audience to
follow – VERDICT
ON MATT SMITH –
new doctor.
Main feature –
“Doctor Who?” is
largest text on
page.
Stars eye is in the middle
of the page, breaking the
rule of thirds, and part of
his page is obscured.
The star is famous
enough that his face is
hidden from view, yet he
can still attract
audiences.
Despite breaking the
rule of thirds there is
still eye contact with
the reader.
Barcode, price & region.
Region is given because
programme times
change in different
places.
5. Flat plan for LEAVERS
The header shows why the
magazine is best for buy
and most people now have
Sky or Virgin so it is aimed
at a wide audience.
Advertisements linking to
brand loyalty and trust.
Conforms to rule of thirds
and makes use of direct
eye contact to attract
reader.
Main feature – “Leavers”
is largest text on page.
“rhetorical question?”
creates a story for the
audience to follow..

6. I incorporated strong conventions in
order to create a realistic TV
magazine.
I decided on a close up shot for the
front cover image rather than a group
shot as we used a group shot for the
poster .
I also did this as the first episode is all
about Ruby and here she is the main
focus, with an interview inside.
I feel the arrangement of the features
worked well and I will try and copy this
when I make the real thing.
