2. WHAT DOES A FILM DISTRIBUTOR
DO?
A film distributor is a company responsible for the marketing of a film. They set
release dates and decide the method by which films can be watched by the public.
Examples of UK independent film distributors
-STUDIOCANAL
-Vertigo Films
-The Works
3. STUDIOCANAL
Films distributed by
STUDIOCANAL:
Example 1:Paddington (Adventure/Fantasy)
Target Audience- The heart-warming story of
Paddington attracts families with children of a
wide variety of ages.
Budget-$38.5 million
Paddington is a typically British film and directed at a British
target audience. Elements of the film are made using CGI
equipment which would be needed in my film due to the
element of action/fantasy. The marketing of the film such as
the posters use bright/vibrant colours and create a magical
atmosphere which appeal to the target audience of families.
The trailer underlines the element of adventure in the film
through the fast-paced tinkling music and yellow titling “A
STUDIOCANAL is a British distribution company who commits themselves to creativity an
works collaboratively with filmmakers for the best possible results.
Films distributed by
STUDIOCANAL:
Example 2: Ragnarok (Action/Adventure)
Target Audience- Teenagers aged 12-
18
Budget-$38.5 million
Ragnorok is an action/adventure film which tells the story
of a Zombie apocalypse. Unlike Paddington, this film is
aimed at an older target audience and focuses more
heavily on action rather than fantasy. The trailer creates an
air of mystery through the low-key lighting and deep,
cryptic voiceover. This film is not typically British but aimed
Conclusion
Overall
STUDIOCANAL
would be a good
distributor for my
film as they have
an outstanding
track record of
successfully
distributing
Action/Adventure
films.
4. VERTIGO FILMSVertigo Films is a British production/distribution company based in London. It
is committed to producing commercially independent cinema.
Films distributed by Vertigo
Films:
Example 1:Monsters (Drama/Sci-fi)
Target Audience- This high-energy,
thrilling adventure film appeals to
teenagers.
Budget-$500,000
This film is about an American tourist who finds
themselves travelling through an infected zone
after Earth has suffered an Alien invasion. This
film is slightly different to my film as it is slightly
darker and more heavily based on science-fiction
Films distributed by Vertigo
Films:
Example 1:The Sweeney
(Action/Crime/Drama)
Target Audience- This film has a
certificate of 15 so is suitable for older
teenagers/adults.
Budget-$3,000,000
This film is a British independent film following
a police officer in London's metropolitan police.
Conclusion
Overall Vertigo Films
is good as it mainly
distributes British
independent films.
However it does not
seem to distribute
films of an
action/adventure/fan
tasy genre so may
not be an ideal
company to
distribute my film.
5. THE WORKSThe Works is a leading distribution company with a proven record of quality,
excellence and reliability. They have formed powerful partnerships and delivered
innovative campaigns.
Films distributed by The
Works:
Example 1: Ten canoes (Adventure)
Target Audience- Adults
Budget-$2,200,000
This film is an adventure film about a mythical
story from the past featuring love, sorcery and
revenge. This is an Australian film and unlike my
film targeted at a British audience.
Films distributed by The
Works:
Example 1: Mongol: The rise to Power of
Genghis Khan
Target Audience- This high-energy,
thrilling adventure film appeals to
teenagers.
Budget-$20,000,000
This film is about an American tourist who finds
themselves travelling through an infected zone

darker and more heavily based on science-fiction
