This presentation is an overview of the Community-Based Environmental Monitoring Network (CBEMN) at Saint Mary's University. The CBEMN assists community groups in monitoring, networking, and in resolving environmental issues.

This type of CBM is set apart from the others: Top-down: focus is more on monitoring for legislation and guideline infractions Bottom-up: focus is more on fears of environmental catastrophes Multi-party: tends to focus on a single area (i.e. watershed) and identify problems within it.
Can assist in Protocols for data collection
Groups that I work with have been primarily concerned and therefore engaged in freshwater monitoring. Their work is either baseline or in response to a perceived impact; very little results and in-put in terms of integrating into the decision-making structure.
No regulations for sediment control. Two years ago HRM indicated that they would undertake water quality monitoring and wanted to involve the community in management. Nothing concrete has happened to-date. There remains a need for provincial regulations for storm water quality and quantity
What exactly do we do here at the Network? This is not an easy question because there are so many answers. First and Foremost We assist people in need (Ex: Ed Grace, Springfield Lake Residents Association) We help groups start monitoring projects (Ex: Beth McGee, Five Bridge Wilderness Heritage Trust) We do sediment analysis, water quality tests, stream health assessments, forest research, etc. (Ex: Nine Mile River, SRA suspended sediment) We lend out equipment thru the Environmental Stewardship Equipment Bank(Ex: GPS) We bring people together to meet and discuss environmental issues (Ex: CBEMN workshop; June 21, 2004) Our Network is an on-going project that is always changing to meet the needs of the community.
