Sports at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India
The 19th Commonwealth Games will be contested from 3 to 14 October 2010, competitors striving
for success in 17 sporting codes. That's an increase of one sport on the 2006 Games in Melbourne.
Basketball and triathlon have been omitted, while archery, tennis and wrestling are added.
Aquatics
The swimming, diving and synchronised events will take place from the first to the last day of
competition. Swimming is up first, from 4 to 9 October, at the new Dr. SP Mukherjee Swimming
Stadium, part of the main Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex. On 24 June the ABC reported
Australian swimming head coach Leigh Nugent as being impressed with the new stadium, and
describing it as 'state of the art.'
Archery
Archery returns to the Commonwealth Games for just the second time, having appeared in Brisbane
in 1982. The original plan was for two venues. Yamuna Sports Complex was to host the preliminary
competition, with advanced rounds conducted at India Gate from 7 to 10 October. On 8 July The
Hindu newspaper reported that India Gate would not now be used, with no reason given.
Athletics
The 60,000 seat Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is the venue for track and field, which will take place
from 6 to 12 October. Tradition will be maintained when the marathon ends competition just prior to
the closing ceremony on 14 October. The finishing touches are being put on JN Stadium, which has
missed several deadlines for completion but will be ready before the end of July, according to
officials.
Badminton
The Siri Fort Sports Complex is the venue for badminton, a regular Commonwealth Games event
since Kingston in 1966. Competition in singles, doubles and mixed doubles will run through the
duration of the games.
Boxing
Eleven weight divisions (men only) will be contested at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium from 5 to 13
October. Boxing is an original Commonwealth Games sport, included since the first British Empire
Games in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.
Cycling
Cycling has only been absent at one Games, the very first in Hamilton. Track cycling will be held at
the Indira Ghandi Sports Complex from 5 to 8 October, with road races on 10 and 13 October. There
will be ten men's and eight women's events.
Gymnastics
The gymnastic competition will run throughout the Games. Twenty gold medals will be contested at
the IG Sports Complex, 12 for women and eight for men. Gymnastics has been a part of the Games
since Edmonton, 1978.
Hockey
Hockey entered the Games at Kuala Lumpur in 1998. The refurbished Major Dhyan Chand National
Stadium is the venue for the men's and women's tournaments.
Lawn Bowls
Only at Kingston has Lawn Bowls been missing from Games competition. The JN Sports Complex will
host singles, pairs and triples for men and women, from 4 to 13 October.
Netball
The netball tournament (women only) will be held at Thyagaraj Sports Complex from 4 to 14
October. Netball was also introduced in Kuala Lumpur.
Rugby Sevens
The third team sport to join the Games at Kuala Lumpur, Rugby Sevens (men only) will be played at
North Campus, Delhi University. The two-day competition will be held on 11 and 12 October.
Shooting
Most shooting events will take place at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, with the full-bore events
at the Central Reserve Police Force Campus, Kadarpur. In all there are 23 events for men and 13 for
women, running from 5 to 13 October.
Squash
Also introduced at KL, squash will be contested by men and women, singles, doubles and mixed, at
the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
Table Tennis
In its third Games having been introduced in Manchester 2002, table tennis will take place at
Yamuna Sports Complex with a full series of singles, doubles and mixed.
Tennis
The R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex will host the Commonwealth Games' first tennis tournament from
4 to 10 October, with five gold medals up for competition. Bult in 1970, the upgraded tennis facility
was reopened on 12 July 2010.
Weightlifting
Eight weightlifting events for men and seven for women will be contested at the JN Sports Complex.
Events will run from 4 to 12 October.
Wrestling
The wrestling competition takes place from 5 to 10 October at IG Sports Complex, with 14 events for
men and 7 for women. Men's wrestling has appeared at most Commonwealth Games, but Delhi will
be the first occasion when women compete in the sport.
