2. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Crib Death)
- The sudden death of an infant, usually under
1 year of age, which remains unexplained after a
complete postmortem investigation, including an
autopsy, examination of the death scene and review
of the case history
WHAT IS SUDDEN INFANT
DEATH SYNDROME?
3. โข Sudden arrhythmia death is most commonly
due to a serious abnormal change to the
heart's rhythm known as an arrhythmia, such
as ventricular tachycardia.
โข Sudden cardiac death describes a sudden
death as a result of an un-resuscitated
cardiac arrest or heart attack.
4. โข Prone sleep position
โข Sleeping on a soft surface
โข Maternal smoking during pregnancy
โข Overheating
โข Late or no prenatal care
โข Young maternal age
โข Preterm birth and/or low birth weight
โข Male gender
RISK FACTORS
5. Increased risk with:
โข Lower socioeconomic status
โข Younger maternal age
โข Lower maternal education
โข Single marital status
SOCIAL
FACTORS
PREGNANCY RELATED
FACTORS
Mothers of SIDS infants:
โข Less prenatal care
โข Care initiated later in pregnancy
โข Low birth weight
โข Preterm birth
โข Shorter intervals between
pregnancies (< 18 mo)
โข More often 2nd or higher order
birth child
6. Major association between intrauterine exposure to
cigarette smoking and risk of SIDS
โข Risk of death is progressively greater with increased
smoking
โข May be small independent effect of paternal smoking
โข An independent effect of postnatal exposure to tobacco
smoke has been found in a small number of studies as
well as dose-response effect with number of household
smokers
SUBSTANCE USE
7. The majority of sudden deaths are due to
inherited heart conditions. Screening family members
where there has been a heart condition or a previous
sudden death, including a sudden infant death (SIDS),
could identify pre-existing conditions that may cause
sudden death. Appropriate treatment could then
prevent or reduce the risk of sudden death occurring.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO PREVENT
SUDDEN DEATH SYNDROME?
