1. Capes methods Translation : 2/4 : Quick test of how you translate….
1. In a scale of importance ranging from one (lowest) to five (highest), what
figure would you attribute to translation in the Capes Programme?
2. Do you translate every day (I love it)/every week (I have to love it)/every
month (I hate it)/as seldom as possible/under torture…others???
3. Do you translate back and forward into the two languages at one sitting,
or do you separate the two?
4. How many times do you read the text through before you translate it:
once (that’s enough!)/twice (more than enough)/three times (for God’s
sake..)
5. Do you annotate your translation? With what? (no, the answer isn’t a
pencil..)
6. Do you makes notes in the margin, vocab/structure/grammar/others?
7. Can you read the actual text once you’ve finished your annotations?
8. Do you write out a complete rough draft of your translation?
9. Do you do the translations given out in class (of course you do..) timing
yourself as you go?
10. Out of the 2.5 hours allotted to the exam text, how much time do you
spend : reading?/working on the text?/translating?/re-reading?
11. How do you think you can improve your translations?
12. Do you work alone? In pairs? In a threesome?
13. Do you find translation fun? (No, I’m not joking..it is just possible)
14. Have you got the virus ? Check : Do you ever find yourself speeding up the
motorway trying to translate ‘Un Ricard, sinon rien’ for an hour after you
have seen the poster? No? Ah well, perhaps I am the only one..and the
answer is..come on then..what??!!!
