                                     Academic Advisors

    Academic Advisement
Academic advisement is a continuing process of communication between an advisor and a stu-
dent. Academic advisement enhances the quality of your experience in college and includes
(but isn’t limited to) the planning of short-term and long-term educational and career goals,
discovery of appropriate course and program recommendations for reaching those goals, and
referral to other college resources.

Academic Advisement is a shared responsibility. You and your advisor must work together to
develop and maintain the relationship. Provided here are some rights and responsibilities that
will assist you in becoming an active, informed participant in this important college relation-
ship.

As a Dillard University student you have both rights and responsibilities regarding academic
advisement and the attainment of your educational goals:

                A GLOSSARY OF ADVISEMENT AND REGISTRATION TERMS
Academic Probation
      Failure to meet the grade point average required for satisfactory academic progress.
Academic Divisions
      The university is divided into six academic divisions. Most divisions are further subdivided into
      departments or programs representing particular fields of study.
Advisement
       The process of making recommendations to students concerning the selection of courses, taking into
       consideration such as previous course work in the field, their degree requirements, and their career, and graduate plans.
BA
         Bachelor of Arts, an undergraduate degree.
BS
         Bachelor of Science, an undergraduate degree.
Classification
         Progression through the curriculum determined by the number of semester credit hours completed:
                  Freshpersons     0-29 semester hours
                  Sophomores       30-64 semester hours
                  Juniors          65-94 semester hours
                  Seniors          95 hours or more
Course request form
        The registration form on which you indicated your course selections that have been approved by an
        Advisor or an Emerging Faculty Fellow.
Credit Hour
        Indicates the value of a course and is generally determined by the number of hours spent in class each week.
        (For example: ENG 101 is worth 3 credit hours.)

Drop/Add
       The process of deleting (dropping) a course from your enrolled courses or enrolling in an additional course (adding).
               Drop/add can only be done during a designated period early in the semester. After that, no courses can be added
and,           as the semester progresses, there are strict guidelines for dropping (withdrawing) from a course.
Early Academic Alert System
        Outreach and counseling early in the semester made by Emerging Faculty Fellows to freshperson
        experiencing academic difficulty.

        Requires a 3.20-3.49 GPA and Deans’ List of 3.5-4.0 GPA.
Major
         Your academic area of concentration.
Master Schedule
        A computer printout which lists courses, days, times, credit hours, instructor, and seats available for each course in a given
        semester.
Registration
        The activity of enrolling for courses through a computerized process.
Schedule
         A computer printout which indicates the courses for which you are registered, and the days, times, and rooms that your
classes meet.
