MH-CET Biology - Chromosomal Basis of Inheritance - Definitions
1. Chromosomal Basis of Inheritance – Definitions
1.
Heredity.
Heredity can be defined as the inheritance or transmission of characters from one
generation to the next generation.
2.
Variations.
The differences existing between the parents and their off-springs and among their
sibling are called variations.
3.
Genetics.
The scientific study of mechanism of heredity and causes of variation is called
genetics.
4.
Nucleoid.
Irregularly folded mass of genetic material present in the prokaryotic cells is called
nucleoid.
5.
Plasmid.
Circular DNA molecule present in prokaryotic cells which is capable of independent
existence is called a plasmid.
6.
Heterogamesis.
Chromosomal mechanism of sex determination is called heterogamesis.
7.
Syndrome.
The appearance of different type of symptoms at the same time in an individual is
called syndrome.
8.
Aneuploidy.
Addition or deletion of one or two chromosomes in diploid chromosomal set is called
aneuploidy.
9.
Non-disjunction.
2. Nondisjunction is the phenomenon in which chromosomes fail to separate at the time
of cell division, resulting in abnormal chromosomal combinations.
