 The American Diabetes Association is one of
the United States' leading organizations
researching a cure and fighting the effects of
diabetes. In this country alone, nearly 26
million suffer from some form of diabetes, and
an estimated 79 million have pre-diabetes
symptoms. Diabetes and its related health
problems, including heart disease, stroke,
blindness, and amputation, resulted in $174
billion in health costs in 2007.

3. About American Diabetes
Association
 Founded in 1940 as an organization for
medical providers treating those with the
disease, the ADA opened up to general
membership in 1970. With public support
revenues of more than $200 million in 2011,
the American Diabetes Association funded
information campaigns and research totaling
nearly $100 million, in addition advocating for
those with the disease.

 About the author: Dr. Lamont Tyler is the
current Medical Director of Specialty Physician
Services at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in
Bloomington, Illinois, and supports the
American Diabetes Association. Dr. Tyler
earned his medical degree from the Chicago
College of Osteopathic Medicine and was
nominated as an Illinois Family Physician of
the Year in 1990 and 1991.
