ESSAY STRUCTURE
Introduction
1. Write a general sentence on the topic of the essay question – not necessarily answering the essay
question, just providing a statement on the topic of it.
2. The topic sentence of the first body paragraph (try not to make it too long)
3. The topic sentence of the second body paragraph (try not to make it too long)
4. The topic sentence of the third body paragraph (try not to make it too long)
5. Contention: do you agree with the essay question, or not?
Body Paragraph 1 (e.g. Agree)
1. The topic sentence of the body paragraph (try not to copy the introduction topic sentence). This
can be up to 2-3 sentences.
2. Explanation of the point you’re illustrating.
3. Backup with point with evidence and/or examples.
4. Elaborate on the evidence/example and how it relates to the topic of the BP.
5. Tie back the paragraph’s point to the essay topic.
Body Paragraph 2 (e.g. Agree)
1. The topic sentence of the body paragraph (try not to copy the introduction topic sentence). This
can be up to 2-3 sentences.
2. Explanation of the point you’re illustrating.
3. Backup with point with evidence and/or examples.
4. Elaborate on the evidence/example and how it relates to the topic of the BP.
5. Tie back the paragraph’s point to the essay topic.
Body Paragraph 3 (e.g. Disagree)
1. The topic sentence of the body paragraph (try not to copy the introduction topic sentence). This
can be up to 2-3 sentences.
2. Explanation of the point you’re illustrating.
3. Backup with point with evidence and/or examples.
4. Elaborate on the evidence/example and how it relates to the topic of the BP.
5. Tie back the paragraph’s point to the essay topic.
Conclusion
1. Repeat your contention that you mentioned in your introduction
2. BP1 topic sentence repetition preferably in other words (or similar words)
3. BP2 topic sentence repetition preferably in other words (or similar words)
4. BP3 topic sentence repetition preferably in other words (or similar words)
Notes: Always use linking words when starting new paragraphs especially for BP2 and BP3.
