This document summarizes several chapters from the book of Judges in the Bible. It discusses various judges that ruled over Israel, including Tola, Jair, Jephthah, and others. It also describes Jephthah making a vow that resulted in him sacrificing his daughter, though some believe he instead dedicated her to lifelong service. The document notes the story of Samson's birth being foretold and requirements of the Nazirite vow, including not cutting one's hair.

2. Judges 10:1, “to save” [yasha]
• NAU Judges 10:1 Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son
of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save
[yasha] Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of
Ephraim.
• NAU 2 Samuel 22:3 My God, my rock, in whom I take
refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my
stronghold and my refuge; My savior [yasha], You save
[yasha] me from violence.
• NIVO 1 Corinthians 10:4 and drank the same spiritual
drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that
accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
• NAU Ps. 106:21 They forgot God their Savior [yasha… 2
3. Judges 10:3, Jair
• NAU Judges 10:3 After him, Jair the Gileadite
arose and judged Israel twenty-two years.
• I hope that our service to the Lord, recorded
for eternity, includes more than how long will
be served, where we lived, how many kids and
donkeys we had, and that we died.

4. Judges 10:6-14
Same Song Different Answer
• NAU Judges 10:6 Then the sons of Israel again did
evil in the sight of the LORD… 7 The anger of the
LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into
the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the
sons of Ammon. 8 They afflicted and crushed the
sons of Israel…for eighteen years they… 9 …Israel
was greatly distressed. 10 Then the sons of Israel
cried out to the LORD [last time in Judges]… 13 "Yet you
have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I
will no longer deliver you. 14 "Go and cry out to the
gods which you have chosen…

Sibling Rivalry On Steroids
• NAU Judges 11:1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a
valiant warrior, but he was the son of a harlot. And
Gilead was the father of Jephthah. 2 Gilead's wife
bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up,
they drove Jephthah out and said to him, "You shall
not have an inheritance in our father's house, for
you are the son of another woman.”… 7 Then
Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Did you not
hate me and drive me from my father's house? So
why have you come to me now when you are in
trouble?" 7
8. Judges 11:7, Jephthah
• NAU Judges 11:7 Then Jephthah said to the elders of
Gilead, "Did you not hate me and drive me from my
father's house? So why have you come to me now
when you are in trouble?"
• Os Hillman wrote, “…Jephthah was a man who
overcame his obstacles and refused to allow his
circumstances to prevent him from becoming great
in God’s sight…”

9. Let’s Read Judges 11:12-18
• NKJ Judges 11:21 `And the LORD God of Israel
delivered [who delivered?] Sihon and all his
people into the hand of Israel, and they
defeated them. Thus Israel gained possession
of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited
that country.
• It seems that God honored their selection of a
judge (10:18).
9
10. Judges 11:19-28
• NAU Judges 11:19 'And Israel sent messengers
to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of
Heshbon, and Israel said to him, "Please let us
pass through your land to our place.” … 28 But
the king of the sons of Ammon disregarded the
message which Jephthah sent him.
10
11. Judges 11:26, 300 Years
• NAU Judges 11:26 'While Israel lived in Heshbon and its
villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities
that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years,
why did you not recover them within that time?
• The Defenders Study Bible, Dr. Henry Morris, Page 299,
“The chronology of the period of the judges is difficult to
decipher, but this statement of Jephthah’s, inserted more
or less incidentally in his polemic against the king of
Ammon, provides an important constraint on such
estimates… Thus, the time from the beginning of the
conquest under Joshua until the judgeship Jephthah was
about 300 years…”
11
13. Judges 11:29
The Spirit Came Upon Jephthah
• NAU Judges 11:29 Now the Spirit of the LORD
came upon Jephthah, so that he passed
through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed
through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of
Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon.
• He was empowered for service by the Holy
Spirit of God. He was not “in dwelt” (sealed) by
the Holy Spirit like Christians are (2 Timothy 1:5+14,
Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 3:16).
13
14. Judges 11:30, Vows
• NAU Judges 11:30 Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and
said, "If You will indeed give the sons of Ammon into my
hand, 31 then it shall be that whatever comes out of the
doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace
from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I will
offer it up as a burnt offering.”
• NAU Ecclesiastes 5:5 It is better that you should not vow
than that you should vow and not pay.
• NAU Matthew 5:33 "Again, you have heard that the
ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS,
BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.' 34 "But I
say to you, make no oath at all… 14
15. Judges 11:30, Child Sacrifice?
• NAU Judges 11:31 …it shall be the LORD'S, and
I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
• Some emphasize the “and” and translate it
“or” in his vow, seeing two categories in this
vow. #1, any human coming out would “be the
LORD’S” (human sacrifice was condemned
under the Law), “and/or”, #2 any animal that
came out first would be sacrificed and burned
up.
15
16. Judges 11:30, Child Sacrifice?
• Other commentators (me too), in considering the context,
believe that he was dedicating his daughter to the service of
the Lord as a perpetual virgin.
• NAU Judges 11:34 …his daughter was coming out …she was
his one and only child; besides her he had no son or
daughter… 37 She said to her father, "Let this thing be done
for me; let me alone two months, that I may go to the
mountains and weep because of my virginity [virginity not life]
…38 …and wept on the mountains because of her virginity.
39 …her father, who did to her according to the vow which
he had made; and she had no relations with a man [of course
she did not if she was dead]. … 40 …Israel went yearly to
commemorate [recount, rehearse, not mourn] the daughter of 16
17. Judges 11:30
Child Sacrifice Was Forbidden
• NAU Leviticus 20:2 "You shall also say to the sons of Israel:
'Any man from the sons of Israel or from the aliens sojourning
in Israel who gives any of his offspring to Molech, shall surely
be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with
stones.
• NAU 2 Kings 23:10 …that no man might make his son or his
daughter pass through the fire for Molech.
• NAU Jeremiah 32:35 …cause their sons and their daughters to
pass through the fire to Molech, which I had not commanded
them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this
abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
• NAU Deuteronomy 12:31 "You shall not behave thus …for they

18. Judges 11:30
Child Sacrifice Was Forbidden
• Jephthah is never condemned for supposedly
killing his daughter, instead he is so praised that
he makes it into “The Hall Of Faith”;
• NAU Hebrews 11:32 And what more shall I say?
For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak,
Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the
prophets,
• Don't let Bible critics box you into this corner,
Jephthah is a hero of the faith! He dedicated his
daughter to serve the Lord (as Samuel and John
the Baptist were later). 18
19. Judges 11:30, Child Sacrifice?
• The very next account to follow is concerning the
Nazirite vow dedicating Sampson to the service of the
Lord for his entire life.
• NAU Leviticus 20:2 "You shall also say to the sons of
Israel: 'Any man from the sons of Israel or from the
aliens sojourning in Israel who gives any of his
offspring to Molech, shall surely be put to death; the
people of the land shall stone him with stones.
• Remember the Judges theme in; Judges 21:25 In
those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did
what was right in his own eyes. Okay 19
20. Judges 11:31, Peace (definition)
• NAU Judges 11:31 then it shall be that
whatever comes out of the doors of my house
to meet me when I return in peace from the
sons of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I
will offer it up as a burnt offering."

22. Judges 12:5
Pronounce It Correctly!
• NAU Judges 12:5 The Gileadites captured the
fords of the Jordan opposite Ephraim. And it
happened when any of the fugitives of Ephraim
said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead would
say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said,
“No," 6 then they would say to him, "Say now,
'Shibboleth.'" But he said, "Sibboleth," for he
could not pronounce it correctly. Then they seized
him and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. Thus
there fell at that time 42,000 of Ephraim.

23. Judges 12:7-15, 3 More Judges
• NAU Judges 12:7 Jephthah judged Israel six
years. Then Jephthah…died … 8 Now Ibzan of
Bethlehem judged Israel after him… 10 Then
Ibzan died… 11 Now Elon the Zebulunite
judged Israel after him; and he judged Israel
ten years. 12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died
…13 Now Abdon the son of Hillel the
Pirathonite judged Israel after him. 14 …eight
years. 15 Then Abdon… died and was buried…

LORD gave them into the hands of the
Philistines forty years.

26. Judges 13:7, Nazirite Vow
• NAU Numbers 6:1 Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2
"Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When a man or
woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to
dedicate himself to the LORD, 3 he shall abstain from wine
and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar, whether made
from wine or strong drink, nor shall he drink any grape juice
nor eat fresh or dried grapes. 4 'All the days of his separation
he shall not eat anything that is produced by the grape vine,
from the seeds even to the skin. 5 'All the days of his vow of
separation no razor shall pass over his head. He shall be holy
until the days are fulfilled for which he separated himself to
the LORD; he shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long.

29. Judges 13
“the angel of the LORD”
• NAU Judges 13:3 Then the angel of the LORD appeared to
the woman… 6 Then the woman came and told her husband,
saying, "A man [no wings, not a cherub] of God came to me and his
appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very
awesome.
• NAU Revelation 1:10 …I heard behind me a loud voice like
the sound of a trumpet, …13 and …I saw one like a son of
man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across
His chest with a golden sash. 14 His head and His hair were
white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a

unclean thing; let her observe all that I commanded.” 15
Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "Please let us
detain you so that we may prepare a young goat for you.”
16 The angel of the LORD said to Manoah, "Though you
detain me, I will not eat your food, but if you prepare a burnt
offering, then offer it to the LORD." For Manoah did not
know that he was the angel of the LORD. 17 Manoah said to
the angel of the LORD, "What is your name, so that when
your words come to pass, we may honor you?" 18 But the
angel of the LORD said to him, "Why do you ask my name,
seeing it is wonderful?" 30

34. Judges 13:25, Mart DeHaan in BEEN
THINKING ABOUT, February 2013
• “Mart DeHaan wrote an article concerning SAMSON AND
JESUS. It makes several points of similarity between Samson
and Jesus; "Their births were announced by an angel. They
were both born to be deliverers of Israel. They were
dedicated to the Lord at birth. They were born to deliver
their people from their enemies. They died tragic deaths.
They accomplished more in death that in the days of their
lives. Such comparisons might make us uncomfortable
because of what we know about the scandals of Samson.”
So he also lists a column of differences between Samson
and Jesus; "Samson was born with God's help to a childless
couple. Jesus was born of a

human weakness and sin. Jesus lived without sin. Samson
loved women to their harm. Jesus loved women and men
for their good. Samson died for his own sins. Jesus died for
the sins of others. Samson accomplishments were
temporary. Jesus' were eternal. What emerges is a wisdom
and love that are greater than our sin. Now we can better
understand the mystery of the messenger who announced
Samson's birth. The God who was providing a partial
national deliverance through a sinful strong man was giving
a foretaste of the full and complete salvation that would
be one day be won by his son."

37. Judges 14:5, He Tore The Lion
• NAU Judges 14:5 Then Samson went down to
Timnah with his father and mother, and came
as far as the vineyards of Timnah; and behold,
a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The
Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, so

• “Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah.” – Judges 11:29a
• We’ve all heard stories of individuals who have overcome extreme hardship during their childhood years. Children of
alcoholics, orphans who never have parents, loss of parents to a fatal crash, childhood disease – these are all difficult
circumstances to overcome.
• Jephthah was a man who overcame his obstacles and refused to allow his circumstances to prevent him from becoming
great in God’s sight. He was born to Gilead, a result of his father’s adulterous encounter with a prostitute. Jephthah’s
half-brothers decided to reject Jephthah, and drove him away from their home saying, “You are not going to get any
inheritance in our family because you are the son of another woman.” Imagine the rejection this young man felt as he
was cast away from his own family.
• This experience taught Jephthah to become a hardened warrior. Today he probably would have been part of a street
gang. As he got older, his reputation as a warrior became known to those in his country, so much so that when the
Ammonites made war on Israel, the elders of Gilead went to Jephthah and asked him to be their commander. Jephthah
had to fight off those feelings of rejection from previous years. 46
47. Judges 13:5,
• How Big Was Samson?
• Saturday, May 3rd, 2014Bible And History
• Old Testament
• Q. I have a question about Samson. I recently heard a Pastor remark that Samson was a relatively
small man and his strength was of God. I know the strength came from God and it would make it
even more remarkable to those people at that time if he were small, but I don’t know if that is
actually stated in the Bible. I believe the pastor was assuming he was of normal size and not muscle
bound as most pictures portray him.
• A. Samson could be called the world’s first super hero. There is no physical description of Samson in
the Bible. His strength was derived from the power of the Holy Spirit and was available to him only
as long as he kept his Nazarite vow to the Lord (Judges 13:5).
• When Delilah persuaded him to let her cut his hair, thereby breaking his vow, his strength left him
and he was captured. From this I presume that without the Holy Spirit he was a man of ordinary
stature and capability.
• If that’s the case then Samson serves as an important example of what an ordinary person can be
capable of when working in the power of the Holy Spirit.

48. Judges 13:6, Eternal Bodies, Resurrection
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY, Dear Compass,
• I have often wondered: If we don't age in heaven, do babies that have gone there always stay
babies? And what age will we be? I don't want to live to be 100 if that's what I'm going to look like
for eternity!
•
ANSWER:
• The new body believers receive is different than the one we now have here on earth. Although we
will have all the knowledge accumulated on earth (Luke 16:28), we will be different physically
(Philippians 3:21). Our bodies also will be similar to angels:
• . . . in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. —
Matthew 22:30Being compared to angels is not too shabby.
• Angels are majestic in appearance, "awesome" (Judges 13:6).
• Angels have great wisdom: "know all that is in the earth" (2 Samuel 14:20).
• Angels are "mighty in strength" (Psalm 103:20).
• But realize we are a higher order than the angels: ". . . we shall judge angels" (1 Corinthians 6:3).But
the most important parts of us, our spirit and soul, have no mass. Our containers, therefore, are just
not that important. But for a rough idea in human terminology, we think the men will all be around
age 21 and the women age 18. (No, we don't have a verse for that!) :-)
49. Judges 14:5, Beth-Shemesh
• NAU Joshua 15:10 The border turned about from
Baalah westward to Mount Seir, and continued to the
slope of Mount Jearim on the north (that is, Chesalon),
and went down to Beth-shemesh and continued
through Timnah.
• Vernon Peterman says, “Found at Tel Beth-Shemesh
was an 11th century BC seal depicting a man fighting
a lion, which would match with the location and the
timeframe for the account of Samson fighting and
defeating a lion (Judges 14:5-15:18).”
50. Judges 14:19 Archaeologists Discover
Goliath Relatives?, Ashkelon
• “After decades of studying what Philistines left behind, we have finally come face to face with the people
themselves,” said Daniel Master, the American archaeologist who has led an excavation of the site since
1985. “With this discovery, we are unlocking the secrets of their origins.”
• Master and his team, under the Leon Levy Expedition associated with Harvard University’s Semitic Museum
and other institutions, have been studying the remains of a Philistine settlement at the edge of the Israeli city
Ashkelon for three decades. The cemetery—likely the first such discovery of its kind—was found in 2013 but
kept under wraps until just recently.
• Goliath, slain in the Bible by David, Israel’s future king, is arguably the most famous Philistine. His people
lived some three millennia ago as strangers in Jewish territory near what is now Tel Aviv.
• The Philistines were traders and seafarers who lived in the area between what is now Gaza and Tel Aviv
from 1200 to about 600 BC. They spoke a language of Indo-European origin, did not practice circumcision as
the Jews did, and ate pork and dog, according to the researchers.
• They were also said to have been experts in making wine and oil.
• -www.dw.com/en, 12 July 2016
• Arno Froese <info@midnightcall.com Commentary: The story recorded in Scripture is extremely important
because, from the lineage of David, the Messiah was born. He had to be born from a free house, as 1 Samuel
17:25 documents, “And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is
he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will
give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel” (1 Samuel 17:25). David did slay Goliath, and
he indeed became free, but not in reality physically, because he was severely persecuted by King Saul.
50
51. • The Philistines went up, and they encamped in Judah, spreading out at
Lehi.
• JUDGES (15:9)
• Jerusalem Inspiration
• The land of Judah encompasses much of the Biblical heartland of the Land
of Israel. Hebron and Bethlehem are in the heart of Judah and Jerusalem is
on its border. Although it borders the territories of Judah and Benjamin,
according to tradition, Jerusalem was not given to a specific tribe but,
rather, belongs to all of Israel. The holiness of the city chosen by God is a
unifying force that joins everyone together in the service of the Almighty.
