2. REASON ONE
Without the Foundation
we are an international
collection of clubs doing
good works at a local
level - with the
Foundation we become a
major force for doing
good on a global basis
3. Rotary Foundation Good Works-More than Polio Plus
Shelter
Boxes for
Haitian
Earthquake
Survivors
Wells across
the
developing
world
Peace
Conference for
Arab and
Israeli Youth
Pediatric
Heart
Surgery in
India and
Egypt
4. The focus areas beyond Polio Plus
Peace and Conflict Resolution
Disease Prevention and Treatment
Water and Sanitation
Maternal and Child Health
Basic Education and Literacy
Economic and Community Development
6. There are three organizations that rank
international charitable foundations:
The American Institute of Philanthropy;
Charity Navigator; and
Better Business Bureau
7. These organizations will not rate a charity
unless at least 65% of contributions goes
to programs.
Those above 75% are considered highly
efficient charities
The Rotary Foundation 88-89%
8. How do they rate the Rotary Foundation?
Charity Navigator in 2012 ranked the
Foundation fourth of The Ten Best
Charities with a 4 star rating and 68.57
rating points out of 70
Better Business Wise Giving Alliance-full
accreditation
9. American Institute Of Philanthropy
• A+ rating same as Sierra Club & Save the
Children
• A rating - Oxfam, Doctors without Borders
• A- rating- American Red Cross
• B+ rating - Habitat for Humanity
10. REASON THREE
The Foundation does not rest on its laurels
it continues to find ways to use limited
resources more effectively
11. Improvements
BEFORE
12 types of grants
20% of program budget to
long term projects with high
impact - 80% short term
with limited impact
AFTER
Three types of grants global, district and
packaged
This has been reversed
80% now allocated to high
impact sustainable projects
12. Improvements
BEFORE
Application process
convoluted and approval
process was slow
AFTER
Applications are
processed online and
more quickly
Districts had limited control
over funding and approval
process
• Each Qualified District
has Designated Funds of
which up to 50% can be
used for short term
District Grants more
funding and control at the
district level
13. Improvements
BEFORE
Group Study Exchanges
were sometimes more
cultural then study
exchange
AFTER
Vocational Training Teams more focused group of like
professionals either learning
or teaching abroad
Less than rigorous
measurement of grant and
project outcomes
Sustained measurable
outcomes in line with
Rotary’s strategic plan are
mandatory
14. REASON FOUR
• Your Donation has a much greater impact
then you realize
• Even the smallest of donations can have a
significant impact and even more so if part
of an Every Member/Every Year
subscription
15. REASON FOUR
Developed World
$50 will pay for movie
tickets, popcorn, and soft
drinks for two adults
Developing World
$50 will pay for cataract
surgery for one adult in
India
$100 will pay for a round of
golf
$100 will pay for 310 polio
vaccine doses
$500 will buy two tickets at
a concert or sporting event
$500 will buy prosthetics for
8 children in Cambodia
16. REASON FOUR
Developed World
$1,000 will buy an above
average set of golf clubs for
one adult
Developing World
$1,000 will buy a hand
drilled well for a village in
India
$10,000 will buy cosmetic
surgery for one adult
$10,000 will buy eye saving
surgery for 85 in rural
Mexico
17. WHY I SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION
It epitomizes all that is best of Rotary and is
a great force for good in the world.
There is no more effective vehicle for us as
Rotarians for actually delivering incredible
positive outcomes to those around the world
who are most in need.
It is a Foundation we can be proud of – and
as investors can trust.
18. WHY WE SHOULD SUPPORT THE
FOUNDATION
The Foundation is only as strong as the support
we give it- whether that is $10 per year, $1,000
per year(all tax deductible) a legacy/endowment
estate gift, or assisting in a district, global or
packaged grant
