  • words to create by.. I learn about things by doing them,  not reading about them. folio Another secret is my husband, who somehow knows what the next big thing will be—about six months before it breaks. So I listen to him. As for inspiration, I make sure to take vacations (to give my batteries a serious recharge) and I try to not work on the weekends unless absolutely necessary. Daily, I make sure to get plenty of sleep; my brain figures out things overnight, which is kind of weird. I have some of my best ideas right when I wake up in the morning, and when I'm driving to work. chris courtney | designhawg.com

I think it is important to at least folio stay in touch with the latest technological miracles so that you are able to talk about it. You need not become an expert with it, just familiar enough with it to know what it can and cannot do. We spend so much time learning new technology, there is little time left over for the creative and inspiration side of the brain. We need to be able to balance the two needs. chris courtney | designhawg.com

I believe myself to be surfing on the edge of the wave of technology since the early 90s. folio I think what initially lead me down a path of NEEDing to know everything about everything is necessity. I came up in a work (freelance) environment where companies started to believe that their secretary could do my job, because they know "adobe." So I had to go well beyond just knowing "Adobe." I took every freelance call as a challenge, and when the client asked if I can do that, I simply said no problem. Then I was up all night trying to figure out this non-problem. chris courtney | designhawg.com

I learned how to put photos and video into Google maps because I desperately wanted to promote my folio new study abroad program to Spain with a virtual tour of it so that MSU students could experience the trip without actually going there and see how cool it would be. • words to create by.. When it comes to online design, one great thing is it's pretty easy to see how a site is done. Look at the code. Is folio that java? Is there a CSS menu that I love on some site? There are many places to find the code and then play with it. You don't have to be able to write code in CSS or HTML. Copy, paste and play. Recently I found some sites that really highlighted the idea of the site having an "environment." There was one site with an illustrated background where if you scrolled up you went up into the sky and space and if you scrolled down you went to the sea floor. That was ingenious, I thought. Too many sites are data dumps. chris courtney | designhawg.com

  • words to create by.. I am particularly interested in new ways of displaying and analyzing data ... I spend a lot of time thinking about how to folio tell a story and on new ways to approach a story. I use some basic primitive tools: a pencil, a sketchpad, and as many creative people as I can find. We try to imagine something new, something different that might explain a story in a whole new light. THEN we try to figure out if a technology exists that can help us do what we want to do. If we think of the technology first, we will be limited by what it is supposed to do. If we think of the result first, we often push the technology to places that stretch it. chris courtney | designhawg.com

  • words to create by.. It drives me nuts when people go straight to the computer to start working on an idea. I find that if you work on the folio computer during the concept stage you are limited by your understanding of the software, the tools and time. With a pen and paper, I can rough out several layouts in the time it takes you to do one on the computer. I work small and loose. Take a little sketchbook with you wherever you go. (I have one that fits in my back pocket.) chris courtney | designhawg.com

When you combine these with observations from the world around you, your supply of ideas is limitless. I find idea generation is often instinctual. Sometimes I’ll be sitting at home and spend a few minutes thinking about an upcoming project and get the urge to sketch an idea out. I look at the relationships they have to each other, thus creating a mood that best illustrates the story. chris courtney | designhawg.com
