The Sarasota AutoArt Magazine will feature the ten professional national and international artists that have been selected by their sponsors to paint ten cars in the '24-Hour Art Endurance Competition' May 28th & 29th, 2011. Cars will either be permanently painted or auto-wrapped by SignZoo to protect the original surface.... but that decision does not come without some trepidation as who would want to remove artwork that someday may exceed not only the value of the car but maybe upward of tens of millions as the BMW Art Cars have become. The fast and furious competition is sure to be an amazing art event that will bring "Art that Moves You"!

Ten Art Teams • Ten Cars • Ten Sponsors
Lots of Paint!
The Sarasota AutoArt Show is hosting the fast and furious “24-Hour Art Endurance Competition”
starting at 10 a.m. Saturday Morning, November 28th, 2011. Dozens of artists applied to be one of the ten
hand-selected teams that will use a car as their canvas to create fine art in this endurance competition. All
artists are required to hand paint or draw their entire design and no air-brushing or spray painting will be
allowed. All the artists are professional with amazing portfolios. While many of the cars will be auto-wrapped
in white by SignZoo to protect the original surface, the decisions to do so did not come easy for the sponsors
and car owners.
Many of the artists are important and nobody can ultimately image how much the artwork
will increase over time. All sponsors risk removing someone’s work that may exceed the values of the cars in
years to come... imagine removing an Andy Warhol only to find out they are worth millions? The sponsors of
each team had the opportunity to pick the car to be painted, the artist who will paint it and name their art
team. Sponsors can have one or two cars exhibited along side their art team and will have a 10’ x 10’ tent
for promoting their business. Sponsors will provide the pit crew for the 24-Hour Art Endurance that is some-
what fashioned after the LeMans 24-Hour Endurance Race!

The automobiles of the classic era 1925 to 1948 were
distinguished by their graceful designs, premium crafts-
manship, and unusual materials. The French Bugat-
ti, Talbot, and Delage, the American Duesenberg and
Packard, the Italian Alfa Romeo - such legendary cars
brought art and simple elegance to the road. These and
many other spectacular models from the automobile’s
golden age are featured here in the extraordinary photo-
graphs of Michael Furman. Never before has a photog-
rapher compiled such a collection of cars, created with
impeccable artistic appreciation and an exacting eye for
detail. In more than 150 full-color photographs, Motor
Cars of the Classic Era captures the breathtaking beau-
ty of these objects of desire, some of them extremely
rare and published here for the first time. An informa-
tive text and an illustrated index of technical informa-
tion describe the qualities that make each car unique.
Sure to appeal to both the high-end automobile collector
and the more casual car aficionado, this book is a visual
tour de force, a deluxe, beautifully designed volume that
matches in spirit the exquisite automobiles it celebrates.
29. Sarasota Chalk Festival
The Sarasota Chalk Festival is diving into its fourth season
November 1st - 7th 2011. Celebrating the history of the performance art
of street painting, hundreds of artists will travel to Sarasota from all over
the world to turn South Pineapple Avenue into walking Museum. Art-
ists will create a time-line of work starting with the early art-form when
street-painters used the red clay from fallen roof tiles, coal from fire-
places and white chalk on the bare earth to draw images of the Virgin
Mary and travel through to today’s current contemporary of movements.
Avenida de Colores, Inc. Avenida de Colores, Inc. was founded in 2010
by Denise Kowal as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation based in Sarasota,
Florida in the United States. The corporation is organized for the pur-
pose of providing students with experiences and instruction in the vi-
sual and performing arts and to enrich communities with cultural events.
The corporation produces the Sarasota Chalk Festival a cultur-
al event. The corporation functions solely on donations from pa-
trons, sponsorships, and grants and it is a fully volunteer organization.
30. Sarasota Chalk Festival History
In 2007, as president of the Burns Square Property Owners Association, Inc.
Kowal founded the Avenida de Colores Chalk Festival, a street painting festival
held on South Pineapple Avenue in the downtown Sarasota historic area known
as Burns Square. Only twenty-two artists participated in this first festival.
In 2009, the second Avenida de Colores Chalk Festival was held with ap-
proximately one hundred street painters participating, who were drawn
from all over the USA, and more than two hundred local stage performers.
In 2010, the Burns Square Property Owners Association relinquished the
Avenida de Colores Chalk Festival to the Avenida de Colores nonprofit cor-
poration. The street painting festival was renamed the Sarasota Chalk Fes-
tival and has grown into one of the most important street painting festi-
vals in the world. The festival expanded several blocks in Burns Square to
accommodate the two hundred and fifty street painters who participated,
being drawn from all over the world, which made the Sarasota Chalk Fes-
tival the first international street painting festival in the United States.
31. First international street painting festival in the U.S.
While pursuing its mission to create cultural events, in 2010, the Avenida de Colo-
res made history by producing the first international street painting festival in the
United States, called the Sarasota Chalk Festival. Street painting festivals started in
the United States in 1987, but this festival was the first to attract many of the best
street painting artists from all over the world to participate. The festival had notable
Guinness World Record holders Edgar Mueller from Germany, Leon Keer from Nether-
lands, and Tracy Lee Stum from the USA. Genna Panzarella from the USA, who was
the first woman to receive Italy’s honorable Maestra Madonnari title at the Internation-
al Grazi di Curtatone competition, participated as well as Vera Bugatti from Italy, who
also holds the Maestra Madonnari title. Maestro Madonnaro Edgar Mueller created a
100’ x 40’ 3-D street painting that is the first known contemporary street painting that
metamorphosed from one image to another with the change from day to night because
the painter used photoluminescence paints. The Sarasota Chalk Festival also was the
first street painting festival to have a Halloween-theme for the artists work as well as
three over-sized 3-D installations, one of which incorporating two-point perspective.

Jetsons? Well, the way technology is progressing, you might
as well get set for the sci-fi kind of life. Earlier today, I wrote
about futurist cars that could zip commuters round the world

urban mobility. Suddenly, science-fiction does not seem that
fantastical anymore.
Students of the automotive design and fashion department of
Barcelona’s European Institute of Design are working in col-
laboration with Iniciativa BMW on a project that explores
how city folk shall commute in the future. An exhibition of
their creations will be held on the Rambla Catalunya in cen-
tral Barcelona. The exhibition is named “El traje que te trans-
porta“, which roughly translates into “Suits That Transport”.
Among the most interesting designs is “Comme des Voiture”
(picture above). This mobile suit includes a pair of boots that
have large ball-bearings on the soles and an intelligent visor of-
fering real-time information. The “Flying Suit” also seems an
interesting creation. The suit appears inflatable. But will it help
the wearer fly to his destination? A third creation that catches
the attention is “City-Skiing”. Ski enthusiasts would love this last
piece, for it suggests skiing as a transport option within a city.
Whether a design project like this results in real solutions is
anybody’s guess. However, one must applaud the level of
creativity that the Barcelona students have
brought to the design table.
