EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
COATESVILLE
GRAND PRIX
INVITATIONAL VINTAGE AUTOMOBILE
On behalf of the City Council, I would like to extend to visitors a warm welcome to
Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Our city incorporates more than 13,000 residents, divided
into four neighborhoods within a picturesque valley, who are joining together to
transform and reactivate their city into a growing, vibrant destination.
Projects and partnerships now unfolding in the city, illustrate that residents,
businesses and officials are actively working to create a sense of community
and a public realm that is diverse and dynamic. These initiatives are strengthened
and emboldened with the support of city government and the development of
landmark events such as the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix.
Right here and now, there is endless opportunity for revival, reinvestment and
revitalization. Coatesville is the only city in Chester County, one of the country’s
most affluent counties. We are surrounded by some of the wealthiest individuals
and communities in the Commonwealth, and in the nation.
Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix attendees will be able to observe for themselves
that the industrial history, architectural character, building scale and construction
materials used so many decades ago in this quintessential city scape were built
to last and remain prevalent and treasured from city block to city block.
Coatesville, PA offers a great opportunity to showcase the commitment of the
county and State in reinvesting in this hidden gem, by putting legislative and
financial tools into the hands of the City and its leadership that can be used to
rebuild the City’s infrastructure, create jobs, and help Coatesville
become self-sustaining and vibrant again.
Future projects include a revitalized train station (already served by Amtrak).
The Gateway Redevelopment Project and Redevelopment Authority will both bring
modern nuances while simultaneously preserving the city’s integrity.
The vision of success for the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix blends a multitude
of city dwellers, county residents and other event attendees lining the streets
of Coatesville thrilled by the remarkably restored cars that pass by, enjoying a
variety of local food and beverage options, picturing new businesses in trans-
formed store fronts and leaving Gateway Park at the end of the day saying that
they hope this turning point event returns in 2017!
Have fun, enjoy the festivities, and come visit us again!
Sincerely,
Michael Trio
Coatesville City Manager

Origins of the Inaugural and Invitational
CoatesvilleVintageGrandPrix
id the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix originate because the City Manager
stumbled upon Dick Miles’ impressive and world-renowned car shop in
the heart of the city?
That may be part of the story, but its beginnings go much farther back in time. It started
with young boys and their Matchbox cars with their winding and connecting race tracks.
Add in makeshift go carts inspired by The Little Rascals. There are also the plentiful
memories of sitting on Dad laps and getting a feel for being behind the wheel while just
trying to see the road beyond the dashboard.
From there, it was sitting on the floor in the family room with eyes and ears wide open and
peeled to Bud Lindeman’s Car & Track show. Early coverage of the Daytona 500 and Indy
stirred many a young man’s automobile passions as well. The wrecks were as spectacular
as the successes banking around turns at death defying speeds.
Whatever the origins, the approximately 50 drivers here today, including some impressive
women, the car club members, and special guests all have different and wonderful
inspirations that transitioned into the unique and reverently restored vehicles that will
be traversing the Coatesville streets and hillsides today.
They will all be traveling along 2.2 miles of Lincoln Highway, America’s first historic
super highway!
Daryl Bryner will be driving his formidable 1969 Fiat 850.
Roger Radbill could not be more proud of his 1923 Mercer
Raceabout. Tom Biel, Cliff Murray, Mike Casale, and
Chris Duerr will all astound with their Porsches.
Eddie Davidson’s ‘67 Jag is sure to be smooth. It may not be
Eagles green, but Coach Vermeil will score points in his 1927 Sprint Car!
William Walsh has a 1911 Mercer Raceabout that still does not feel its age.
And look for a Lotus Super 7 owned by Dave Baker — wow!
Steve Moskowitz, Paul Presanti, Willem Van Huystee, the two Georges:
Alderman and Wintersteen, and Mike Rowan plus special guests will all
be in the lineup!
Motorcycles will also enjoy cruising Coatesville’s streets. Randy Hoffman
is entering his 1939 Velo KTT Mk VIII. Don’t miss Ed Fisher’s special
guest and 1951 Triumph T100C, or John Light with his 1965
Matchless G80. Or could it be the Melniczuks will triumph?
Regardless of who gets around the track the fastest, the
intended overall winner of the Coatesville Vintage Grand
Prix is the city of Coatesville itself. This landmark event is
all about inviting drivers and spectators from far and wide to
witness for themselves the reactivation of Chester County’s only city
and all the opportunity there is here for wide-ranging and
uncommon development.
The VROOM! VROOM! excitement and stunning
vehicles will take your breath away!
Start Your Engines! The 2016 Coatesville
Vintage Grand Prix is very ready to begin!

In 1965, the Fiat 850 Sport Spider made its world debut.
The small, fun-to-drive little spider was an instant
success in the European and US markets. Nuccio
Bertone, the 850’s designer, obviously knew what he
was doing and designed a package the delivered real
sports car driving fun. It was inevitable that the little
car would prove to be a blast to race as well.
Fiat’s 850 Spider, prepped and tuned right, was a fierce
competitor against other makes in its racing class like
Austin Healeys, Mini Coopers, and MGs. And that’s
how this particular Fiat 850 Spider started its life, and
incredibly, is still going strong today.
From the moment this little car rolled off the delivery
trailer at the dealership, it was destined to be prepped
and modified for SCCA racing. Abarth, the famous race
tuning company and partner of Fiat, supplied racing
parts through its catalog. With the catalog in hand, and
no expense spared, parts were ordered and labor was
begun to make this 850 a top racer. Over the next 10
years or more, it did battle on famous tracks like Wat-
kins Glenn, Bridgehampton, Lauden, and Lime Rock. In
wheel-to-wheel, fender-to-fender racing, it still bears
some of those war scars to prove it!
After enjoying good racing success, the original owner
decided to move on to other cars and the little Fiat was
left behind. Its race battling days seemingly over.
Now I’ve known about this car since I was a little kid
and I saw it race when I went to racing events with
my father, who was very active in racing at the time.
Growing up at all the tracks, it was inevitable that one
day I, too, would be racing my own cars. As soon as
I legally could, I started to build my own racing cars,
modifying and tuning them to race. Through the years
I have had the pleasure of owning many. But little did
I know that one day that little 850 Spider I watched
as a kid would end up with me.
I remember the day at the shop, when one of the local
scrap haulers stopped in to show me a picture of a
what he thought was a “Dune Buggy “ he had gotten
for free. He wanted to know if I was interested? Incred-
ibly, the fuzzy Polaroid picture he showed me was of
the little Fiat 850 Spider that I watched race as a kid.
I couldn’t believe it!
The car was in pretty bad shape from years of neglect.
So, over the next 10 years I restored the car to its pres-
ent condition. I’ve owned the car for almost 30 years
now and I’ve been vintage racing it for 18 years. I just
love this car. It’s special, fun, and exciting to drive. And
I have enjoyed good success racing it against some of
its old racing foes—those same Austin Healeys, Mini
Coopers, and MGs.
I guess Nuccio Bertone and Fiat really did know what
they were doing back in 1965.
I’d like to thank the city of Coatesville for having this
event and giving me a chance to show off this special
little car. If you see me out there, come by and say
hello!

Our city incorporates more than 13,000 residents, divided into four neighborhoods within a picturesque valley, who are joining together to transform and reactivate their city into a growing, vibrant destination. Projects and partnerships now unfolding in the city, illustrate that residents, businesses and officials are actively working to create a sense of community and a public realm that is diverse and dynamic. These initiatives are strengthened and emboldened with the support of city government and the development of landmark events such as the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix. Right here and now, there is endless opportunity for revival, reinvestment and revitalization. Coatesville is the only city in Chester County, one of the country’s most affluent counties. • 4. Origins of the Inaugural and Invitational CoatesvilleVintageGrandPrix id the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix originate because the City Manager stumbled upon Dick Miles’ impressive and world-renowned car shop in the heart of the city? That may be part of the story, but its beginnings go much farther back in time. It started with young boys and their Matchbox cars with their winding and connecting race tracks. Add in makeshift go carts inspired by The Little Rascals. There are also the plentiful memories of sitting on Dad laps and getting a feel for being behind the wheel while just trying to see the road beyond the dashboard. From there, it was sitting on the floor in the family room with eyes and ears wide open and peeled to Bud Lindeman’s Car & Track show. Early coverage of the Daytona 500 and Indy stirred many a young man’s automobile passions as well. The wrecks were as spectacular as the successes banking around turns at death defying speeds. Whatever the origins, the approximately 50 drivers here today, including some impressive women, the car club members, and special guests all have different and wonderful inspirations that transitioned into the unique and reverently restored vehicles that will be traversing the Coatesville streets and hillsides today. They will all be traveling along 2.2 miles of Lincoln Highway, America’s first historic super highway! Daryl Bryner will be driving his formidable 1969 Fiat 850. Roger Radbill could not be more proud of his 1923 Mercer Raceabout. Tom Biel, Cliff Murray, Mike Casale, and Chris Duerr will all astound with their Porsches. Eddie Davidson’s ‘67 Jag is sure to be smooth. It may not be Eagles green, but Coach Vermeil will score points in his 1927 Sprint Car! William Walsh has a 1911 Mercer Raceabout that still does not feel its age. And look for a Lotus Super 7 owned by Dave Baker — wow! Steve Moskowitz, Paul Presanti, Willem Van Huystee, the two Georges: Alderman and Wintersteen, and Mike Rowan plus special guests will all be in the lineup! Motorcycles will also enjoy cruising Coatesville’s streets. Randy Hoffman is entering his 1939 Velo KTT Mk VIII. Don’t miss Ed Fisher’s special guest and 1951 Triumph T100C, or John Light with his 1965 Matchless G80. Or could it be the Melniczuks will triumph? Regardless of who gets around the track the fastest, the intended overall winner of the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix is the city of Coatesville itself. This landmark event is all about inviting drivers and spectators from far and wide to witness for themselves the reactivation of Chester County’s only city and all the opportunity there is here for wide-ranging and uncommon development. The VROOM! VROOM! excitement and stunning vehicles will take your breath away! Start Your Engines! The 2016 Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix is very ready to begin! • 6. In 1965, the Fiat 850 Sport Spider made its world debut. The small, fun-to-drive little spider was an instant success in the European and US markets. Nuccio Bertone, the 850’s designer, obviously knew what he was doing and designed a package the delivered real sports car driving fun. It was inevitable that the little car would prove to be a blast to race as well. Fiat’s 850 Spider, prepped and tuned right, was a fierce competitor against other makes in its racing class like Austin Healeys, Mini Coopers, and MGs. And that’s how this particular Fiat 850 Spider started its life, and incredibly, is still going strong today. From the moment this little car rolled off the delivery trailer at the dealership, it was destined to be prepped and modified for SCCA racing. Abarth, the famous race tuning company and partner of Fiat, supplied racing parts through its catalog. With the catalog in hand, and no expense spared, parts were ordered and labor was begun to make this 850 a top racer. Over the next 10 years or more, it did battle on famous tracks like Wat- kins Glenn, Bridgehampton, Lauden, and Lime Rock. In wheel-to-wheel, fender-to-fender racing, it still bears some of those war scars to prove it! After enjoying good racing success, the original owner decided to move on to other cars and the little Fiat was left behind. Its race battling days seemingly over. Now I’ve known about this car since I was a little kid and I saw it race when I went to racing events with my father, who was very active in racing at the time. Growing up at all the tracks, it was inevitable that one day I, too, would be racing my own cars. As soon as I legally could, I started to build my own racing cars, modifying and tuning them to race. Through the years I have had the pleasure of owning many. But little did I know that one day that little 850 Spider I watched as a kid would end up with me. I remember the day at the shop, when one of the local scrap haulers stopped in to show me a picture of a what he thought was a “Dune Buggy “ he had gotten for free. He wanted to know if I was interested? Incred- ibly, the fuzzy Polaroid picture he showed me was of the little Fiat 850 Spider that I watched race as a kid. I couldn’t believe it! The car was in pretty bad shape from years of neglect. So, over the next 10 years I restored the car to its pres- ent condition. I’ve owned the car for almost 30 years now and I’ve been vintage racing it for 18 years. I just love this car. It’s special, fun, and exciting to drive. And I have enjoyed good success racing it against some of its old racing foes—those same Austin Healeys, Mini Coopers, and MGs. I guess Nuccio Bertone and Fiat really did know what they were doing back in 1965. I’d like to thank the city of Coatesville for having this event and giving me a chance to show off this special little car. If you see me out there, come by and say hello!
