2. Grassroots: Ordinary voices
Stories of farmers, fishermen, volunteers, partners, and those who want to
make a difference.
Three years ago, I visited the Pawikan conservation site in Bataan in order
to understand more about environmental preservation through the care of
the pawikan, an icon in Philippine culture. The environmental causes go
hand-in-hand with our goals as developers of the agricultural sector, as the
land that God has given us to live in is to be cared for by its stewards. My
friends who work in both the public and private sector support PDAF as a
brother organization, as we advocate sustainable forestry, the fight against
chemical pollution, and the protection of our native wildlife. I was
particularly curious about the Pawikan conservation site, as my friends had
told me that the shelter was small but conducive to both intensive biological
study and care for the turtles.
Four hours and a boat ride later to the island, I was already stunned by the
sunset and the gift of nature as God has given to us. I dipped my hands
into the water and meditated on what more I could do for the people who
worked closely with the land and water; I always maintain that our partners
here in PDAF are true heroes for our country.
When we reached the conservation site, I was amazed by the species in
the turtle pond; three adult turtles, the size of dogs, swum in the enclosure,
healthy and energetic. Unforgettable for me was the opportunity to hold a
hatchling turtle, which felt like a rubber ball, in my hand, where it fit
perfectly, and moved from palm to palm with its little flippers.
