This 3 storey property was formed as part of a
very poor quality 1970’s subdivision of an A-listed
Georgian house. Only 1 room retained original
Georgian proportioning. The plan arrangement
of the accommodation is different at each level
with rooms from adjacent properties filling in the
gaps between.
We identified that although currently gummed
up with ad hoc flights of pine stair and sanitary
accommodation at different levels formed as part
of the 70’s development, the original Georgian
stair well was the only element that spanned
through all 3 levels. To create a unified connection
from the top floor to the bottom we stripped out
this 10M high space back to the stonework and
formed a new contemporary curving stair. The
stair model
steel skeleton of the stair was prefabricated in
sections and lowered into place then clad in a
dark hardwood and plasterboard to form smooth,
sculptural shapes which we then lit in low energy
LED lighting.
