SUBCULTURE
Definitions of Subculture
What is Subculture?
A sub-culture is a group of people within a
certain culture, which differentiate them
from a larger culture to which they belong.

Youth Subculture
A minority subculture whose distinctiveness
relies largely on it social class and ethnicity;
often characterized by the adoption of a
particular music genre.
Example: CHAVS
Clothing of Chavs
• Chavs are usually associated with wearing
  baggy
  trousers, tracksuits, bandanas, trainers
  and hats.
• Chavs also often wear gold jewellery and
chains – this is enhanced when you see
chavs in films or on television.
• Sometimes Chavs may wear designer
clothing, such as Burberry, but it is often
  known to be fake designer.
Music
• Chavs are most known to listen to
  rap music, e.g. Eminem.
• They are most likely to access their
  music by the internet, using
  YouTube, or by watching music
  channels on the T.V.
Values of Chavs
• Chavs are often found in groups
socialising and are often stereotyped to
hang around street corners with music
  playing out loud.
• They can be recognised by their clothing.
• Some people do feel threatened by chavs
when they are found in groups and often
do not like to approach them.
Influences of Chavs
• Chavs are usually influenced by peers and
the want to fit in. Therefore they will
dress like other people in their group
thinking it will make them look ‘cool’.
• Rap music and celebrities have a big
influence on Chavs too as they give them
something to aspire to be like.
• Chavs may also feel that they will have
authority and power by looking tough
  and dressing this way.
