Editor's Notes
\n
Send birthday cards on the day you last pumped a septic. Send anniversary cards when you did an install and suggest service be done. Send hand-written thank you cards to large accounts, good customers or whenever possible.\n
Join as many local business affiliations as possible. This networks you with potential and existing customers. Join local and national associations, this networks you with colleagues who can help you grow your business.\n
Donate to local charities as often as possible - either service, time or monetary. Doesn’t have to be large amounts. Keep track of them all in hours or dollar value. When you’ve donated to something that someone else is passionate about, you’ve given them reason to trust you, and most likely call you.\n
Volunteer to help with local organizations. Very similar to donating. When you are the coach of someone’s child, who do you think they’ll be more inclined to call when they need some type of plumbing, drain or septic work done?\n
\n
Get your name on a state highway sign and all it costs is labor. It makes you look good within your community. Just make sure you keep it clean!\n
\n
\n
Submit articles to local newspapers, regional magazines, websites. Educate them on proper septic maintenance, talk to them about laws and regulations that might increase environmental awareness. Tell them how the hockey team you sponsored or little league team you coached is performing. Tell them how much time or money you annually donated to local charity. How your float did in the local parade, that your exhibiting at a home show...\n
When you advertise, consider using your pet as a spokesperson, but don’t overdo it. Simple things like postcard reminders.\n
On an anniversary of your business, or simply a significant local or national date, host an open to the public picnic with customers and employees. The annual appreciation party! Can even be a tax write off as a promotional expense.\n
Okay, don’t forget your employees, but remember that customers need recognition too. Have your COM’s picture on your web site (or write about it!, remember?) Give them a gift certificate to a local restaurant or shop.\n
Reward loyalty through cash discounts, thank you cards, COM recognition, “for 10 years of continued business, thanks from us!”, free rental, free service, gift card, etc. Take $25 x 12 months = $300 or even $50 is $600. The good will and chatter goes a long way!\n
Teamwork. Does the solid waste company not offer restrooms, team up to bundle services. Installers team up with excavators, septic guys with drain cleaners, drain cleaners with plumbers, plumbers with septic guys!\n
Your trucks should all match. In fact, all of your equipment should match. So should your uniforms, restrooms, building etc. That’s your brand, make it work. Even if only logo, make it uniform.\n
\n
Bus stops, above urinals in restaurants, billboards, the ballpark, ON YOUR TRUCKS!\n
Almost all vendors here offer private label products for applications, even candy. When it’s got your label, they are more likely to call you when it’s out rather than someone else. Fear that products may not be the same.\n
It’s 2011. Perhaps it’s too late. When was the last time you used a phonebook, really? Use it to promote yourself - all of your news articles we talked about. Your pets, your employees, your customers! Keep content fresh, outdated sites are as useless as not having one at all. Directions, services offered, homeowner information, sponsorships, etc!\n
It’s free! Ensures your listed. Offers free analytics (stats) on performance.\n
550 million users on Facebook, 106 million users on Twitter, \n
\n
Twitter is a little more difficult to grasp, but offers some opportunities. Flickr is photo sharing, don’t forget the old fashioned way. Talking.\n
\n
\n
Raise your hand if you have cell phone? What about a smart phone - iPhone, Droid, Blackberry, etc? Have you used it since you left home to find anything? Hotel, restaurant, etc?\n
