2. Garth Lenz
is a member of the International League of Conservation Photographers, and a
conservational activist in his home country of Canada. He recently awarded second and
third prize in the photojournalism and environmental categories of the Pris de la
Photographie Paris competition for his moving photos of the tar mining happening across
some of the largest natural habitats left in Canada.
3. Garth started his presentation by telling facts about the worlds largest and most intact
forest, Canada’s Boreal forest. It is home to the largest remaining herds of caribou and
bison, as well as 50% of North America’s bird life. Catching his audience by stating how
important these rich habitats are to North America.
4. He maintained his grip on the audience by passionately describing the size and scale,
literally and figuratively, of the damage being caused by the tar mining process. He
stresses the effect that these huge mines have on the ecosystem, and that in a few years
the area they cover across northern Canada will be the size of Florida, completely
destroying one of the last great forests on Earth.
5. Thou Shalt Reveal thy Curiosity and Thy Passion
Is the commandment I would say Garth follows, being that its easy to see his curiosity and
passion. All the pictures used in his presentation were taken himself and his dedication to
unveil the scope of the tar mining plants showing his passion on the subject.
6. Dynamism: 34
Is the rating I would give for Garth, as he was not very well animated and at some points
would seem “too” passionate, tearing up midsentence, pushing me away from the topic
at hand. That said he has done his research and is very passionate, being able to get the
point across to the audience.
7. Garths Slideshow and presentation has a very clear message from the start, and strongly
pushes the point in an easy to grasp way. His photographs are all compelling and greatly
show what he's trying to show very similar to Garr Reynolds and Nancy Duarte’s style.
8. Garth’s style of presentation was quite different from sir Ken Robinson’s. While Ken keeps
the presentation down to earth and light with a “not so urgent” feel, Garth is the
opposite. Garth pushes the subject with an intense urgency of action and duty to take
care of the situation. Garth also uses many pictures of the event to push his story, while
Ken uses mainly himself
talking with the audience
to show the point he's
trying to get across.
9. Advice I could give to fellow classmates based on garth’s presentation would mainly be
passionate about your subject. Choose something that really catches your interest,
because if you are not interested in what your presenting then nobody else will be either.
Yet there is a limit, becoming too passionate will only push your audience away.
