MANY PARENTS TODAY FACE THE REALITY OF DEALING WITH A CHILD THAT HAS
OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER (ODD). WHAT IS ODD YOU ASK? IT IS A CHILD
WITH A SEVERE LACK OF AUTHORITY, RESPECT, A PATTERN OF NONCOMPLIANT,
ARGUMENTATIVE, ANGRY, HOSTILE, AND DEFIANT BEHAVIOR THAT HAS PERSISTED
FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS. IT HAS VERY NOTICEABLE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS SUCH
AS TANTRUMS, ACADEMIC PROBLEMS, LACK OF SELF ESTEEM, AND DIFFICULTY
MAINTAINING FRIENDSHIPS. IT IS RELATIVELY COMMON AMONG 3-8 YEAR OLD
CHILDREN AND OFTEN ACCOMPANIES ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPER ACTIVITY
DISORDER (ADHD).

MY RESEARCH PROCESS TOOK ABOUT 2 MONTHS. IT TOOK TIME TO SCHEDULE
AND CONDUCT THE INTERVIEWS, AND OBSERVE THE CHILD,. WITH THE
INTERVIEWS I MADE SURE THEY WERE CONDUCTED IN A QUIET SECLUDED AREA. I
FELT I WOULD GET THE BEST RESULTS THIS WAY.
I ALSO MADE SURE THE CHILD DID NOT REALIZE I WAS OBSERVING OR
RECORDING HIM FOR THE SAME REASON TO GET THE BEST RESULTS I COULD.
IN PERFORMING THIS STUDY I WAS ABLE TO ACHIEVE THE RESULTS I EXPECTED I
LEARNED THE MEANING OF ODD, THE AGES IT AFFECTED, HOW IT IS TREATED, THE
IMPACT IT HAS ON PARENTS, AND CAME UP WITH A RECOMMENDATION
7. USEFUL LESSONS LEARNED
I LEARNED A FEW LESSONS IN RESEARCHING THIS PAPER
IT MAINLY AFFECTS CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 3-8
IT IS TREATED WITH BOTH COUNSELING AND MEDICATION
IT IS A DISORDER THAT 99% OF CHILDREN GROW OUT OF
IT BOTH PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY AFFECTS THE PARENTS
THERE IS PARENT COUNSELING AND CLASSES THAT TEACH THE PARENT HOW TO
DEAL WITH AN ODD CHILD
8. CONCLUSION
MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT A FAMILY THAT IS DEALING WITH A CHILD WITH
ODD SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL THE SERVICES THAT ARE OUT THERE TO
HELP THEM. A COMBINATION OF ALL OF THESE SERVICES WILL MAKE FOR A
SUITABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED.
THE COUNSELING WILL HELP BOTH THE CHILD AND PARENT COPE WITH THE
CHILD’S DISORDER. THE CLASSES WILL TEACH THE PARENT THE APPROPRIATE
MEASURES TO TAKE WHEN THE CHILD IS BEING EXTREMELY DEFIANT.
THE MEDICATION WILL HELP CONTROL THE CHILD’S OUTBURSTS
