Our client was looking to rapidly expand with a mobile solution. The iPad application and the mobile
website are intended to target their customers’ senior management and provide them with an
opportunity to conduct key business transactions and view reports and key performance indicators of
the company on the go, using their existing mobile devices.
Determining cost effective way to test the usability, compatibility, functionality, performance, scalability
and security of the mobile application and mobile website and to support a rapidly evolving and
fragmented mobile market was an enormous task. This involved determining the best practices in the
industry, and strategizing on how to tackle fragmentation of devices, and look ahead into the future to
determine relevant mobile technologies during release.
Our QA team evaluated the existing software tools and licenses within our customer. We considered
multiple options for the functional testing of a globally available mobile solution including using –
Simulators, Real Handsets, Cloud based testing, Crowd sourcing etc. But we decided to go with a cloud
based solution. This solution offered the best balance of costs, with ease of maintenance and
accessibility of the test bed from anywhere across the globe.
This also enabled the testers to easily access real mobile handsets and tablets connected to live mobile
networks across global cell networks. It allowed for a streamlined development, testing and effective
monitoring of the testing processes. We also came up with an equivalency matrix for device handsets to
test and certify, that captured current and anticipated firmware release cycles; alternate browsers used
and the multiple layout engines involved, and provided a high degree of confidence of test coverage for
the client for global deployment.
We used Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 with the load test pack add in, that was available as part of the
existing MSDN subscriber licenses of our customer, thus saving substantial costs for our customer during
performance testing of the application. All the user scenarios and test data were designed by in-house
Subject Matter Experts along with the test engineers. We also recommended the use of a specialized
third party vendor for security and penetration testing to reduce costs by reusing existing licenses that
customer had.
By following industry best practices and capturing all testable requirements and conducting
Independent Verification and Validation of the software, our quality assurance team made sure that the
final product was a quality product matching all of our client’s expectations.
