As Media Evaluation- How did you attract/address your audience? Carys Cooke
Choosing elements to appeal to the target audience Before beginning the project, as a group, my teammates and I designed a questionnaire which we distributed to members of our target audience. From the results collaborated, we decided upon key elements in our thriller. Such as the location, setting and plot twists. The majority of people felt that the best setting for a thriller was during the night, and so, we made our thriller during the night time for this purpose. The majority of people also thought that the best location for a thriller would be inside a house, and therefore, we shot a large part of the film inside the house, and only a small part outside of the house. The Audience research was very helpful as this allowed myself and my group to make the appropriate situation for the thriller. This, enabled us to understand what exactly our target audience would like to see, thus making them happy.
Is the project appropriate for the target audience? The project is appropriate for our target audience, as we looked over the graphs of our audience research, such as ‘what are the key elements of a thriller?’ and ‘preferred characters’ and we tried our best to initiate the results into our work. For example, the majority of the people questioned preferred assassins as the main characters of film, so we created our main character as an assassin. The target audience research also stated that the majority of our intended audience thought that suspense and cliffhangers were a vital part of thrillers, so we added music and a cliffhanger to try and add to the tone of the film, and to create a lot more suspense. I believe the project is appropriate for the target audience, as it adds a majority of what the audience felt were key factors to the film.
The message communicated to the audience through the film When watching our film, the message myself and my group wished to convey to the audience was that of an assassin who in doing his job had somehow messed up, and thus had been running home in panic. When he had reached his home he became more relaxed, and we wanted the audience to almost feel a sense of smugness and self pride emitting from the main character when he realized he had gotten away with it. We also hoped to make the audience feel the character’s panic as he ran down the street, trying to reach his home. We wanted to convey these emotions across as this would make the audience feel more involved with the film as it progressed.
Audience Feedback Overall, the feedback for the project was quite positive, the majority of people rated it as a 3 on the scale of entertainment from 1-5, and we received some very good critical feedback to, which would have helped us to improve on future projects. Lighting issues were a key point made in the majority of the feedbacks along with small skipping parts through the film, which we found difficult to edit out but did improve with over time. Most all of the audience who viewed this stated that they liked that it was set at night, and this corresponded well with our Audience research at the start of the project.
