  2. 2. At the same time that Israel had itskings-Saul, David, Solomon, thePhoenecian people were climbing to theheight of their civilization.
  3. 3. The Phoenicians were the Canaanites and lived onthe coast of the Mediterranean near Israel.
  4. 4. They had a lot ofexperience with the sea andwere traders of the ancientage.
  5. 5. They went as far west asSpain and North Africa.
  6. 6. One of the Phoenicians mostfamous goods was a beautiful,purple-red dye. It came from agland of a sea snail called amurex snail.
  7. 7. Expensive cloth wasmade from this dye andit was cherished by theGreeks and Romans.
  8. 8. It was smelly to make: the snailswere collected in huge nets, and leftto rot. Workers would skim a liquidoff the top to make the dye.
  9. 9. The city of Tyre becamerich form this trade butwas also known for itsstinky odors.
  10. 10. Phoenicians may havegotten their name fromthis reddish dyebecause “Phoinos”means “red”in Greek.
  11. 11. They also madetransparent glass.
  12. 12. They also made a 30letter alphabet. It is thebasis of our languagetoday.
  13. 13. Up until this time, cultures usedsymbols to represent whole word orparts of words.They would have to learn hundredof symbols to communicate in writing.
  14. 14. The Phoenicians alongwith the Hebrewsbegan to make symbolsto represent just onesound.
  15. 15. Their alphabet had just 22 letters, but bycombining the letters, you could makethousands of words.“Byblos” is a Phoenician word for book.We know it as The Book!
  16. 16. Two Phoenicians are listedin the Bible: King Hiram ofTyre sold cedar wood to Solomon forthe Temple.
  17. 17. The other was the evilJezebel . King Ahab ofIsrael married thisprincess ofTyre.
  18. 18. Ezekiel 26:12,14, 17-prophesied of Phoenicia’s doom.
  19. 19. At this time, Israel divided. Solomon died and his sonfought over the kingdom. 10 tribes rebelled againstRehoboam. They are referred to as the NorthKingdom. Jeroboam was their king. The other 2 tribes(Benjamin and Judah) were known as the southernkingdom. The name “jews” come from this time.
  20. 20. I Kings 14:22 And Judah did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins that they committed, more than all that their fathers had done.
  21. 21. In India, religion andculture was thriving. Theybelieved in 100 of gods.Their religion is calledHinduism.
  22. 22. Queen Esther & Danielcame from this far eastarea.
