Palestine is located in the Middle East between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. In 1917, the British government issued the Balfour Declaration supporting the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. This led to Britain gaining a mandate over Palestine after World War 1 and control of the region was disputed, leading to war in 1948 and the Six Day War in 1967 over control of the land.
