Nike timeline
1.
2. Overview
Over the last 20 years, Nike, one of the worlds
largest shoe corporations has had to deal with a ton
of non-responsible practice accusations from the
public. Outsourcing a lot of its contractors to
Indonesia and other countries allowed the company
to cut costs and use the extra money for marketing
campaigns.
3. Overview
Nike remarkably managed to change the practices
dramatically over 20 years. Here are some crucial
points on their timeline from being irresponsible to
changing a lot of their practices and becoming much
less worker abusive. (Wilsey)
4. 1991
Jeff Ballinger published a report that exposed Nikes
irresponsible practices, and showed how bad
working conditions were and wages were as low as
14 cents an hour.
5. 1992-1993
Protesters at the Barcelona Olympic games showed
the world stage what Nike was doing through gaining
the medias attention.
6. 1996
Nike began efforts to make the lives of factory
workers better by creating a department dedicated to
doing so.
7. 1998
Tons of college students around the country
protested the company losing them profit and made
them realize that change that was needed.
8. 1998
After these protests, CEO Phil Knight gives a speech
that states that they have made huge mistakes. He
stated that they will raise the minimum age of
workers, increase the monitoring of workers, and will
use the U.S. OSHA clean air standards in al
factories.
10. 2005
Nike published a list of every factory that it contracts
with becoming the first in the shoe industry to do so.
They also published a report revealing the conditions
and pay in mostly southern Asia factories.
11. Present
Nike still has some issues with their factories to
improve on, but the acts of public protesting and
spreading information via media shows how we can
create change even towards a company as large as
NIKE. (Nisen, 2013)
