Action Games – let’s hear it for the monsters!
1. Action Games – let’s hear it for the monsters!
Online role-playing action games, in the main, invite us to identify with the hero: the all-action,
dragon-slaying glory hunter with the unfeasibly large biceps and a brain the size of a walnut. The
better examples of the genre, such as Bigpoint’s Drakensang Online spice the narrative up with more
cerebral hero, or even anti-hero type characters which facilitate the co-operation and interaction
with fellow gamers, making the internet browser action game such a quantum leap ahead of the
traditional single-player, console role playing game. But where would we be without the array of
monsters, creatures and assorted bad guys which are ranged against us in the dark fantasy world
into which the game designer has catapulted us?
In fact, if the monsters aren’t up to it, the game will never truly take off. It’s the range and character
depth of these denizens of our parallel universe which, to a large extent, determine the quality and
playability of the best action browser games and keeps us heroes coming back for more. You can,
for example, meet the cast of dubious characters which populate Drakensang’s Anderworld at the
game’s website: http://www.drakensang.com/characters#monsters
Not all of them are truly nasty, of course. The Gremlin (pictured on the left) is quite cute, in fact though no doubt his rather appealing demeanour won’t stop the bloodthirsty boneheaded heroes
from slaying him on sight on the rather poor pretext that he likes to steal things and gets involved in
the occasional ambush. Well who doesn’t? We wouldn’t be playing role playing action games if we
didn’t like to indulge in a little petty larceny and swordplay now and again.
The Herald of the Anderworld (on the right) is a different
kettle of fish. He’s rather dangerous –downright deadly, in
fact. But given his rather confused backstory, it’s perhaps not
surprising that killing humans has become something of an
obsession. Perhaps he’s a misunderstood victim of
circumstance who just needs a little love and understanding.
Or perhaps not.
So next time you take your bright sword and go off for a little
light slaying, spare a thought for the monsters. They’ve got
feelings too, you know.
