Controversial ads
1. Controversial adverts
Who is the ad by?
Antonio Fedirici ice-cream
Purpose?
The purpose of the advert is to compare the ice cream to
something god-like and imply it is so good that it‟s sinful, shown
by the pregnant nun.
Is the ad effective?
The ad is effect as the product is clearly advertised and made
clear to the audience, a sense of comedy is also put across but
taken the wrong way by religious or sensitive people.
Why would it be considered controversial and by who?
Some may see the advert as being insensitive to religion by
mocking it whilst others may see the comedy and light-
heartedness of the advertisement. A pregnant nun is seen to be
going against God whilst eating an ice cream advertised with
„Immaculately conceived‟ implying the ice cream is „god-like‟,
making the advert more insensitive to religious people who are
likely to be offended.
Opinion
I can see why this advert can be offensive to extremely religious
people by mocking the birth of Jesus, but others overlook this by
seeing the funny side which is how the product is advertised
through showing extreme measures and examples.
2. Controversial adverts
Who is the ad by?
thatsabortion.com and Religious Right and paid for by Life Always.
What is the purpose?
The purpose of the ad is to display an anti-abortion message and to
discredit services that carry out abortion like Planned Parenthood. It
also shows a growing imbalance between the number of abortions
amongst white Americans and African Americans.
Is the ad effective?
The ad isn‟t really that effective due to how many issues it creates by
implying a race and gender imbalance.
Why could it be considered as controversial and why?
The offensive part of this ad is that it implies a bigger divide in society
and inferiority by suggesting that African American babies are more
likely to be aborted on average. It also frowns upon women who have
abortions and the services that help, when infact it is a woman's
choice as to whether she has a baby or not.
Opinion
My opinion is that this ad is more offensive and not just to more
sensitive people, as racism is still a sensitive issue and implying
inferiority makes the situation worse not just to African Americans but
to women aswell.
3. Controversial adverts
Who is the ad by?
The ad is made for the company Toyota
What is the purpose?
The purpose of the ad is to create a different way to
advertise cars by creating images to „shock‟.
Is the ad effective?
The ad is effective in the way it draws attention to the
page and product, the small by-line at the bottom
implies this is the company‟s aim as you only see “well,
at least he drives a Prius” in a small font near the
bottom of the page if you look carefully.
Why could it be seen as controversial and who by?
The offensiveness of the ad is shown through the way
murder is being joked about as the image is so morbid
all to advertise a car, and some people may take this
advert as encouraging immoral acts and humouring
them. The ad is seen as controversial to people with a
light sense of humour or who are sensitive to dark
images.
Opinion
My opinion is that it is common knowledge that murder
is not encouraged or allowed so the audience should
overlook the obvious and see the funny side.
4. Controversial adverts
Who is the ad by?
The ad is by a campaign called Strong4Life.
What is the purpose?
The purpose of the ad is to stop Georgians “sugar-coating” the
childhood obesity crisis as almost 75% of parents of obese children
ignore the problem.
Is the ad effective?
The ad is effective in the sense that is a very bold and simple ad,
the dominant image of an obese girl looking sad proves the effect
obesity can have on a childhood which will encourage parents to
take action.
Why could the ad be considered controversial and who by?
The ad could be considered controversial by obese people if they
see the ad as mocking the problem by the phrase “it‟s hard to be a
little girl if you‟re not” making the issue seem a joke.
My opinion
In my opinion the ad is not offensive, childhood obesity is a problem
and needs to be handled. The controversy caused by this ad just
proves peoples reluctance to take action and just to ignore the
situation.
5. Controversial adverts
Who is the ad by?
The ad is run by the City of Milwaukee
What is its purpose?
The purpose of the ad is to warn/advise parents about the dangers of
sleeping in your bed with your baby, a number is provided to offer help
if needed to ensure a baby‟s safety.
Is the ad effective?
Yes the ad is effective as the image is really harsh and hard to ignore,
the use of a sleeping baby creates a feeling of innocent threatened by
sleeping next to a knife to show the amount of danger of your baby
sleeping with you.
Why could it be considered controversial and who by?
It could be considered controversial by suggesting that parents are
dangerous to their babies and pose as much threat as a knife. The
have no information and are insensitive to new parents who may need
advice.
My opinion
In my opinion the ad is effective but it could be more sensitive towards
parents and no one wants to be told they are a threat to their baby.
Advice and statistics could be used to create a feeling of advise not just
cold hard facts.
