  89. 89. 28 This 1991 song has since become one of the most popular songs of the decade. The haunting melody is often heard on public radio stations across the United States as interlude between announcements and programming. The song and the music video both have an implied relationship of some kind between X's character and a woman named Mary. Mary is presumably murdered and X, shunned by many in the small town since his childhood, is immediately considered the main suspect. X, however, maintains his innocence throughout the song, and the question of such is left open to the listener's interpretation. Give me song and artist.
