Ferhat

THE LEGEND OF FERHAT AND ŞİRİN It is thought that they live in the time of the PERSIANS Turkish edition of the oldest of th is story was published in 1930. This story has been adapted to film for two times in 1966 and 1970 . It is a folk story. It is said that it took place in Amasya Turkey.

Ferhat was a brave young man,he was a decorator (nakkas) He decorated the palaces, with his brush. And he loved Şirin. He explained his feeling to Şirin.She loved Ferhat too. Şirin was the Sultan of Amasya’s daughter.

Ferhat sent his family to the Sultan of Amasya; in order to get married Şirin.

But, Sultan didn’t want Şirin to marry him,he wanted too difficult thing from Ferhat. “If you bring water to the city, I will let you marry Şirin" But water was in Şahinkaya and it was far away.

But the love of Ferhat's heart didn’t care about this condition. He took his shovel and began to dig the rocks. He split the rocks and let water came. As the time passed people in the city heard the sound of water which came through rocks

Mehmene Banu made plans stealthily and found a witch and sent to Ferhat. The witch found Ferhat by following the water canal .The sound of his pickaxe frightened the witch .Then she laughed and said ‘Why do you dig the rocks ambitiously? Şirin died. I brought you her halvah.’ When he heard these words he shocked. He said ‘If Şirin does’t live in this world anymore, life is meaningless. He hit his pickaxe on his head. He felt dizzy and his words ŞiriiN! echoed in the rocks.

When Şirin heard that Ferhat died,she ran to the rocks and saw the dead body of Ferhat. She jumped from the rocks and her dead body lied next to Ferhat.

Water came to the city but the two young people died. People buried them side by side. Every season, two roses grow on their graves for the lovers but a bush grows between 2 graves and seperates the two lovers and two roses.
