2. DIFFERENT WAYS OF AUDIENCE
PARTICIPATION
Choosing which window to go
through. Thus choosing which
person’s story to follow
Using arrow keys to be able to
move around and see the 360
degree angle of the setting
around the chosen room
Clicking on different parts of
the room to hear specific stories
about the people who live there.
Also being able to click on
different buildings surrounding
the main room to gain a broader
picture of the person’s story,
that audience chose to follow
Being able to move into another
person’s story while in a story.
By clicking on places on the
world map. Or by clicking the
face of another person in the
documentary, at the bottom of
the screen.
3. Differences between Highrise and
Educating the East End (AUDIENCE)
High-rise's audience interest are completely different from that of Educating
the East. As Highrise arguably targets people who interested in the wider
world. And different people’s experience of the world. Whereas Educating the
East End audience is obviously interested in life at Britain’s modern day
secondary schools.
Also the audience for Highrise are probably more aware of the developments of
online media than those of Educating the East End. As the audience for
Educating the East End are still quite use to documentaries airing on TV and
watching them. Rather than the audience of Highrise who will be aware of
interactive documentaries, and will know how to access them.
The audience for Highrise form part of the construction process of the
narrative of the documentary unlike Educating the East End. They have the
power to chose the path of the narrative by choosing which window to go
through etc. While the audience for Educating the East End are forced to follow
the path of the narrative chosen for them by the producers making them less of
an active audience, then that of Highrise
4. SIMILARITIES
Both documentaries
demonstrate its
audience will have an
interest in the world
around them
Both documentaries
take an observational
angle to their subject
matters.
5. ARE AUDIENCES CHANGING OR
STAYING THE SAME
From the above it can be said audiences are changing. As
audiences are now able to become more than just
viewers of media texts. As due to the rise of interactive
documentaries like High-rise and other platforms like
interactive documentaries, audiences are actively
participating in the process of delivery. As they can
chose the direction of the narrative.
6. ARE AUDIENCES CHANGING OR
STAYING THE SAME
As both Educating the
East End and High-rise
follow the lives of specific
people with minimal
interference to be as close
to actuality as can be.
Audiences still view
documentaries from an
observational angle.
However it could also be
said that some
characteristics of
audience are staying the
same.
