Every one needs handkerchief, it plays an important role for each one of us. It is an accessory for fashion, but it is not just an accessory for display but it gives beauty to every outfit you wear.
1. The days of the handkerchief are
not numbered
No other fashion accessory will quite exude as much sophistication as a formal handkerchief, also
sometimes called a pocket square. Should you think that it is far too old-fashioned for your
trendy self, all you need to do is peruse a male fashion magazine to see it featured proudly in
almost all designers’ collections. So the hanky is definitely not to be shunned.
Immortalised by Shakespeare as a plot device in his play Othello, the origin of the handkerchief is
somewhat hard to date, but it seems to have made its appearance in England sometime in the
14th century. What is known is that it used to have more practical purposes, such as wiping one’s
brow (or nose); charmingly, turning into an impromptu bag for children to carry their treasures;
and even proving to be useful when consoling young ladies in distress!
Handkerchiefs eventually fell out of favour for being unhygienic, only to be reborn as a fashion
item. They are now available in a range of fabrics, from cotton, linen, polyester to silk, and an
array of colours and patterns to suit all occasions and tastes.
To choose the right one, you need to take into account the event you will be attending as there is
a clear etiquette. For example, for a very formal event, a white plain handkerchief will be the only
acceptable option. For more relaxed occasions, coloured models will bring a lot of versatility to
your wardrobe, and by playing with complementary or contrasting colours, you can express your
moods and personalise your suit.
2. The style of your handkerchief is not the only way it will make a statement: with this
accessory come varied and striking ways to fold it. The most impressive ones may look
complex, but they are actually not as difficult to achieve as you might think.
The Presidential fold, or classic fold, for instance, is suitable for the most formal gatherings
and is very easy to master, as it simply consists of folding your handkerchief into a rectangle
of just the right size to peep from your breast pocket. Other simple folds include the one-
corner up and two-corner up.
Requiring a little bit more practice, the three-corner up will not put you to shame even at the
most elegant event, while the casual fold will add relaxed elegance to your attire.
Whether you choose those folds, or the more challenging Astaire, named after the famous
singer and dancer, or the Cagney, you will certainly create a sensation wherever you go.
