George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 as the first son
of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington, on
the grounds of Pope's Creek near present-day Colonial Beach
in Westmoreland County (Virginia). Washington's ancestors were
from Sulgrave, England. His great-grandfather, John
Washington, emigrated to Virginia in 1657. His father had four children
by his first wife, Jane Butler, two died young, but two other
children survived (Lawrence, born about 1718, and Augustine, born
about 1720) . His father had a plantation worked by slaves, but then
tried their luck with the extraction of iron. His mother lived to see his
son become a celebrity, but maintained a tense relationship with him.
During the youth of George Washington the family was moderately
prosperous members of the aristocracy of Virginia of "medium range"
3. In the Delaware

The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander in
chief of the Continental Army in 1775. The following year, the
British were driven from Boston, lost New York City and were
defeated at Trenton, New Jersey, to the surprise caused Washington
Crossing the Delaware River. Due to its strategy, revolutionary
forces captured the two main armies fighting British in the Battle
of Saratoga and in the negotiation Yorktown. The colonial
states and French allies, remained a weak army and
a fragile nation through the threats of disintegration
and failure. After leading the American victory in the War of
Independence, resigned his military and returned to life on his
plantation of Mount Vernon, an act that brought him even more
popularity.
4. Since 1847, one of the defining hallmarks of a U.S. President is his appearance on
U.S. currency and postage. George Washington appears on contemporary U.S.
currency, including the one-dollar bill and the U.S. quarter dollar.
