At a press meet in Delhi today, the Art of Living launched its 'Mission
Green Earth Stand Up Take Action 08' campaign, in partnership with the United Nations Millennium
Campaign (UNMC), United Nations Environment program (UNEP), Ministry of Environment &
Forests (Government of India) and Sri Sri Institute of Agriculture Science and Technology.
With a goal to plant 100 million trees, across the world, to help reduce global warming and protect the
environment, the initiative also aims to mobilize a 100 million people, who will Stand Up across the
globe between October 17 & 19, 2008 and renew their commitment towards the Millennium
development Goals (MDG's).
In 2007, His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar, founder of The Art of Living,
endorsed his commitment towards the
fulfillment of the MDG's. Following the
endorsement, Art of Living on Oct 17,
2007, made history by contributing 6.5
million members to the 'Stand Up Speak
Out' global call which urged their
respective governments to fulfill their
MDG pledge.
This year, Art of Living has taken up the
seventh of the MDG's to promote and
support environment sustainability.
Stressing on the fact that the fulfillment
of the MDG's will remain a dream
without the active participation of
people, His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar said in a statement,
Eminent dignitaries at the press meet were Minar Pimple, Deputy Director, United Nations Millennium
Campaign, UN, Lizette Burgers, Chief for Child Environment, UNICEF India, Alexander von
Hildebrand, Regional Advisor, Environmental Health, WHO, former Indian cricketer Nikhil Chopra,
Ms. Nupur Sharma, DUSU President, 200809, and also special guests who are the true inheritors of
this movement – the children. The panelists pledged their commitment to this crucial endeavour and
urged citizens to actively fulfill their part in this campaign.
st
Swami Sadyojathah from the Art of Living said, “21 century is the century of interdependence.
Individuals, Countries, Govts, NGO's have come together for this noble cause. The aim is not only to
plant trees but also to nurture them.”

collectively and ensure that the MDG's are
fulfilled and said, “What we need today is for 1
billion to stand together as one and make sure that
we and our Govt act now and fulfill this pledge.”

values the continuing partnership we enjoy with the Art of Living family globally and we look forward
to the achievement of the MDG's together. Citizens have shown their committment to the MDG's by
taking action. I hope the Govt will respond in keeping with their committment towards achieving the
promise of MDG's by 2015.”
After the screening of Mission Green Earth Stand Up Take Action 2008 Audio Visual, there was a tree
planting ceremony by the children, who are the inheritors of this movement, and the dignitaries, who
are the guardians of this legacy.
Special Guest of Honour, Honourable Shri. I K
Gujral, former Prime Minister, India, blessed the
movement, participated in the tree planting
ceremony, and was honoured in a special

Pledge, where everyone stood together and
pledged their commitment to this pressing global
issue.
Dinesh Ghodke and Khursheed Batliwala,
directors of WAYE, an NGO working with the
youth all over the globe on mgesuta08: "Along
with youth and women empowerment, we need to
look at planet empowerment. Sustainable
development can happen only by making
encouraging something that sustains us, in case of planet earth, it's the trees. Very simply, individuals
need to plant and adopt more trees. And also stop cutting trees."
As part of its MGE campaign, the Art of Living volunteer network has already started tree plantations
across India involving all stakeholders – individuals, corporates, government, NGOs, thus making this
into a meaningful social movement. Even internationally, the Art of Living network is spearheading

Rising pollution!! Global warming!!
Decreasing forest cover!! These are warnings
we have heard a million times in the last few
years. When things have become this bad, the
support of each individual makes a difference.
So what can we do about it? To begin with,
make a commitment to Nature and take a
pledge to beautify mother earth by planting trees.
This was exactly what Infoscions decided to do on 17th October. Standing by their values and
commitments to the society, Infosys once again showed the path to our social responsibilities. ECO
Club of Infosys, joined with World Alliance for Youth Empowerment (WAYE an NGO) to participate in
one of the largest tree planting exercise in the world, Stand Up and Take Action, a campaign in line with
the United Nations Millennium Development Goal organized by UN and the Art of Living Foundation,
aiming to prevent global warming and preserve the environment.
In an unprecedented show of unity and commitment, DCs across India got together to make this event a
success. In view with Infosys reaching 100,000, the ECO Club targeted to plant 100,000 trees in places
where Infosys has its DC. Each DC, in its own innovative
ways, came forward to realize this vision.
This initiative took root in PUNE DC, where the ECO Club
organized the function in both Phase I and Phase II. The
event saw the ceremonial tree plantation followed by the
Stand Up pledge to support Mother Nature. Pune DC
Heads, Mritunjay Kumar & Vibhuti Dubey, shared their
concern for the environment and talked about the steps
required to fight this battle. More than 1000 saplings were
adopted by Punfoscions after the whole event.
Infoscions in Mysore DC, which marks the first step for many of us, participated in the event in a unique
way. The Deputy Conservator of Forests, Smt. Sashwati Mishra (IFS), was the Chief Guest on the
çðì

occasion. From her, fellow MyInfoscions
came to know more about forest conversation
and our role in conserving it. It also provided
an opportunity for Infosys to acknowledge the
efforts of people maintaining the forests and
vegetation in India. On this occasion, it was
announced that every new trainee joining
Infosys would require to plant a tree.
Chennai DC and MCity took this opportunity
to spread awareness about environment
conversation. The event was presided over by
Mr. Vasudevan S, Facilities Manager from
MCity. Mr Vasudevan gave wonderful insights
on how to carry this mission of environmental
sustainability into various dimensions like
recycling and energy conservation. The team
in Chennai had specially organized for the
saplings of Silver Oak for this event.
Further down, in Trivandrum, it was the Voice
of Youth team, which took the lead in organizing
this event. VOY TVM DC is already involved in a similar activity called Green Earth Campaign.
During the event, VOY spread the message of their campaign in their technopark and committed to
continue its work towards a greener earth. Although one of the smaller DCs in terms of number, the
active participation of Infoscions there, made up for it...
Our fellow Infoscions in BBSR, successfully tried their hand at marketing and advertising, to promote
this event. A string of teaser campaigns about Mission Green Earth, adopting a sapling and taking the
pledge were implemented to create awareness.
The Green Team had worked hard the night
before writing eco messages like, “Take
Care…Good planets are hard to find”, “Adopt
a sapling now,” etc. on dried leaves and placed
them on all the tables of the cafeteria. Some
tables had waste print papers cut out in the
shape of trees with messages written on them.
The idea was to campaign without wasting any
resources.
ðïì
This all ensured a highly successful show at BBSR, with more than 200 saplings distributed during the
event. A sense of ownership and belonging was felt amongst Infoscions when they started naming their
adopted saplings. Special thanks to BBSR team for being so creative and working overnight to make the
event successful at BBSR.
