venous insufficiency. Read article for more insights…
Firstly, What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that usually occur just under the skin. Varicose
veins usually are observed at the ankle and thighs but it might also extend upto
groin level. Varicose veins are caused because of increased pressure in the leg
veins, damage to the leg veins or venous insufficiency.
There are some severe diseases related to varicose veins and one of them is
chronic venous insufficiency.
What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a common cause of leg pain and swelling, it is
generally associated with varicose veins. It develops when the valves of the veins
do not function properly, hence impairing the normal circulation of blood.
Symptoms of Chronic Venous Insufficiency
The symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency include:
Itching
Dilated veins
Cramping
Ankle and foot swelling that progress up the lower leg.
Changing in skin color
Aching
Causes of Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs due to poor functioning of vein valves or
blockage in the veins. Vein valves should allow blood to flow against the gravity
2. from the legs back to the heart. But when the valves fail to close properly, then
gravity wins and flow reverses. This is termed as venous reflux. Now the vein
valves may close because of the following reasons:
A history of blood clots in the vein that impairs the valve from working
normally.
Weakness in vein valves that causes the veins to enlarge, hence making it
difficult for the valve to close.
If chronic venous insufficiency is not treated at the right time, it can worsen and
cause more advanced symptoms of CVI. Occasionally, the cause of the problem is
not even in the legs, but is in the pelvis. Here, the blockage of veins may severely
aggravate the symptoms of varicose veins. Watch out!
Are you at More Risk?
The significant factors that lead to the development of chronic venous
insufficiency are:
Age
Standing for long time (Usually do to the type of profession we are working in)
Family History
One or more blood clots in deep veins
Heavy lifting
Diagnosis of Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Your doctor might diagnose you for CVI by many ways. A simple physical
examination can reveal CVI. However, the most accurate test is Venous Duplex
Ultrasound Exam. By this exam, your doctor can detect any blood clots present in
your vein.
Treatment of Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Though CVI can be treated by both medical and Laser procedures, ultimately laser
provides a long lasting cure whereas medicine only prolong the onset.
3. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing. Include as much movement as possible in
everyday life!
Elevate the feet above thighs when sitting.
You can also go for structured exercise such as walking.
Changes in diet.
Hence chronic venous insufficiency might prove to be a costly affair if it is not
taken care at the right time. To be away from CVI, one has to see that they don’t
get varicose veins, hence treat the problem from the root and Book an
