  • 1. Helpful tips on what to include in the personnel chapter of the Business Plan and why it is so important. Brought to you by Wisteria Business Plans.
The most important chapter when writing a business plan – personnel.
  • 2. Why is this the Most Important Chapter? [Part 1]
There are multiple reasons why the Personnel is the most important chapter in a Business Plan:
    • People are the key drivers of a businesses success.
    • 3. Investors acknowledge that ‘great ideas’ are tenfold. Without the right team, none of the other parts really matter.
    • 4. All Business Plan forecasts are based on risky assumptions. The personnel section will show if the teams has the experience to roll up their sleeves and help the company solve it’s potential problems or panic and let the business slip.
  • Why is this the Most Important Chapter? [Part 2]
    • Teams that can demonstrate that they have worked well together previously are more likely to secure investment. The enterprise may be new but the team is not.
    • 5. Forging strong relationships with suppliers, customers and the capability of conveying your marketing message is a key determinant of business success - only an experienced and effective personnel will be capable of this.
  • personnel should consist of?[Part 1]
Ideally the personnel section should be a candid reflection of:
    • Employees position - where they have worked – and for whom?
    • 6. Educational background and date of birth.
    • 7. What have they accomplished – professionally and in the past?
    • 8. Reputation within the business community.
    • 9. Skills, abilities and knowledge that they have acquired.
  • personnel should consist of?[Part 2]
    • Motivations and career development plans.
    • 10. How committed they are to this business venture?
    • 11. Who else needs to be recruited in this business?
    • 12. An organisationalstructure chart may prove useful
    • 13. Mug shots of all key members of staff.
  • Where should it go?
    The personnel section tends to be located at the beginning of the business plan;
    • As this is such an important chapter ensure that your audience is drawn to this immediately.
    • 14. After the executive summary in which the concept has been explained, this is usually an effective place to introduce members of the team.
    • 15. This section should be between 2-4 pages in length.
  • From an investors perspective
Banks are inundated with Business Plan applications. A typical venture capital firm receives approximately 2,000 business plan per year. To differentiate from the stronger and perhaps weaker applications, investors consider:
    • Investors look favorably on a team that is known and established as it eliminates an element of risk - start-ups are unpredictable.
    • 16. Many investors invest in people not ideas.
    • 17. Execution skills arewhat really count.
    • 18. Knowledge and experience in the particular market.
  • An interesting fable
It was taught that a group of hikers from Hungary got lost in the Alps during a snow storm. Only after several days of walking they succeed to find their way back to camp using a map that one member of the group found at the bottom of his backpack. After arrival at the camp, enjoying hot coffee and a meal,  they look at the details at the bottom of the map: it is a map of ... the Pyrenees (mountain range between France and Spain).

In a business context, you often get lost or experience economic slumps outside of the businesses control. This will negatively impact how the business operates and require deviating away from what is originally stated in the business plan.
However, as this particular group of hikers have shown, personnel is key in producing a positive outcome from those negative circumstances that will undoubtedly arise. These hikers had purpose and a visual image of where they want to be that was not reflected on paper.
This shows that the best way to react to the business sphere is for personnel to keep moving throughout the economic climate. Devise that business plan but keep noticing clues, and keep changing and adapting your sense of where the business wants to be. As a result, despite the set back their flawed road map or business plan proved to be good enough with the right people behind it.
