• A technology that enables the Cloud
• Virtualization started with servers (compute) and
storage, now expanding to networks and security
• Most servers are already virtualized
• The software-defined data center (SDDC) offers the
virtualized layers in a ready-to-use bundle

• Possible interpretations:
• The original academic research project:
1. A networking technology that replaces proprietary routing technologies
(like BGP) by a programmable routing scheme
• What the industry adopted:
2. A networking architecture where routing is centrally managed (rather than
distributed) by a “Controller”
3. A network that is programmatically managed through software and APIs
rather than command-lines and GUI
