2. Updating Your GPS
Developing an Effective Worship
Planning Team
Presented by: Larry LaVigne
3. What is a GPS?
• Global Positioning System
• Based on traditional maps (standards)
• Uses modern technology such as computers
and geosynchronous satellites for location and
direction.
• Has an interactive, informative user interface.
• Provides much more detailed information
than a traditional map.
4. You Are Your Church’s GPS
• God Positioning System
• Based on traditions (Bible and doctrine)
• Use modern technology and presentation
methods to help users understand where they
are and how to get to where they need to be.
• Have an interactive, informative user
interface.
• Provide a wide variety of media in order to
reach out to a broader audience.
5. Step One: Choose the Team
• Starting off with the right perspectives and
attitudes is key to developing an effective
Worship Planning Team.
6. F*I*R*S*T
• Every member of the team needs to be FIRST:
– FLEXIBLE- Willing to accept new ideas.
– INVESTED- Motivated by a sincere love for God and a
desire to share that love with others.
– RESPONSIBLE- Willing to complete all assigned tasks in
a timely manner.
– SANCTIFIED- Living a life worthy of respect as you
strive to become more like Jesus.
– TRUTHFUL- Able to be honest and sincere about your
feelings, without hurting others in the process.
7. Diversity
Diversity is a good thing. Include your:
– Worship Leader (if you have one on staff)
– Church Leaders- Pastor/Elders/Board Members
– Music Ministry- Traditional and Contemporary
– Technical/Media Team
– Drama Team
– Greeters/Ushers
– Youth Ministry
– Congregation
9. Step Two: Set a Goal
• The Worship Planning Team must be RISKY
when setting the goal for transition:
–Be Realistic
–Be Intentional
–Be Specific
–Be Kommitted
–Be Yourself
10. The Questions
• What specific opportunities exist in your
community, and how can you take advantage
of them?
• What particular strengths and talents does
your congregation possess that can be used in
ministry?
• How can you be most effective in truly
reaching people for Jesus?
11. Step Three: Establish Your Route
• Walk, Drive, or Fly?
• Get everyone headed in the same direction.
– Master Calendar (Google, Outlook)
– Social Media Page (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
– Shared File Access
– Dedicated Website (Community Church Builder,
Planning Center Online)
• Expect some detours and bumps in the road.
12. Step Four: Gauge Your Progress
• Use metrics to see how you are doing:
– Attendance
– Connection Cards
– Conversions/Baptisms
– Congregational Diversity
– Unity of Spirit
• Ensure that everyone is still moving together in
the same direction toward the goal.
• Don’t be afraid to admit that something is not
working as well as you had hoped.
13. Step Five: Enjoy Your Success
• Recognize and reward your teams and staff.
Changing lives for Christ takes lots of energy
and teamwork.
• Start thinking about renovations and
expansion projects. You will be blessed
abundantly for your faithfulness…
1 Corinthians 9Paul’s Use of His Freedom19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. The Need for Self-Discipline24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
GOALS- Colossians 2:1-3New International Version (NIV)2 I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.RELIGION- Romans 9:30-32New International Version (NIV)Israel’s Unbelief30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.
CHOOSE A ROUTE- Deuteronomy 1:21-23New International Version (NIV)21 See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession of it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”22 Then all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead to spy out the land for us and bring back a report about the route we are to take and the towns we will come to.”23 The idea seemed good to me; so I selected twelve of you, one man from each tribe.
