There was no British surrender at the end of the first American Revolution in Yorktown. Just when you think you
know your history, you may not remember the story of Bacon's Rebellion. Bacon's Rebellion occurred one
hundred years before what most people remember of the American Revolution of 1776. Bacon's Rebellion is
often referred to as the first real American Revolution.
It was during Bacon's Rebellion that Jamestown, the center of Virginia government at that period in time, was
burned to the ground. Rebel forces split into two factions while Jamestown was burning with half going to Surry
county across the James River and the other half moving to Gloucester County across the York river.
While in Gloucester, Nathaniel Bacon, the leader of the rebellion set up camp at Warner Hall, an historic
plantation home, where the lineage includes both George Washington and Robert E Lee as descendants.
Nathaniel Bacon fell very ill with dysentery while at the home of Major Thomas Pate, owner of Gloucester House
plantation, where he died and the rebellion soon ended.
