OVERVIEW
Although it may not get the same level of attention given to
the flywheel or die, the clutch on your mechanical stamping
press is an equally important component.
The stopping time of the clutch and accompanying brake is a
crucial factor both in determining press speed and in
ensuring the safety of the operator and die.
The clutch’s critical role in the performance of your stamping
press requires regular and careful maintenance, including
replacing the clutch fluid.

For the purposes of this example,
we’ll use our OCP Series press, but
the same concepts apply to any
Stamtec mechanical press.
The press should be powered down,
and the air disconnected. You should
also be sure to follow all appropriate
safety procedures.
To begin, you’ll need a 10 mm Allen
wrench as well as a drain pan placed
in the bottom of the flywheel area.

THE PROCEDURE

You’ll want the flywheel to be
positioned as it is in this photo,
with the sight glass (1.) to the
right, with two horizontal marks
on each side.
In this position, there will be
two drain plugs: one at the top
(2.) and another at the bottom.

THE PROCEDURE

Next, remove the top plug with the 10 mm Allen wrench.
Rotate the flywheel counterclockwise until the top plug hole
is at the bottom; fluid will begin pouring out.
Allow the flywheel to completely drain.
Rotate the flywheel back to the top position so that the lines
on either side of the sight glass are perfectly horizontal.
Refill with the proper lubrication until the fluid is level with
the two horizontal marks. Do not overfill or underfill.
Replace the plug and tighten securely; remove the drain pan.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
How to Drain & Fill Clutch Fluid
We recommend draining and refilling the clutch once
annually for every shift that the stamping press is run per
day.
You would replace the clutch fluid once a year on a press
that runs for one shift each day.
On a press that runs three shifts per day, we recommend
replacing the clutch fluid three times per year.
You can find this information on the outside of your press,
tagged next to the specifications. The instructions are also in
your press manual.
