1. Should We Treat Our Boss Differently From Our Co-Workers?
I asked a close friend of mine the other day why he had turned so serious when our
boss entered the room? I’ve worked for many companies and this seems to be the
normal behavior of employees while the boss is present. His response was, “He’s the
boss, so he deserves our respect.”
“True, but doesn’t everyone deserve the
same amount of respect?”, I asked. “I mean
his job is important, but without us his job is
useless. He can’t run this place by himself.
He needs us just as much as we need him.
Without him our job becomes much more
challenging. I don’t think he should be treated
any differently than any other employee, even
the cleaning staff. Imagine if the cleaning
staff were to quit, this place would be a mess, so they are just as important as the boss
and us. Do you agree?”, I asked.
He giggled and answered, yes, but you could tell he wasn’t fully convinced. What I said
seemed to make sense but he was still on the fence about the whole approach.
“Besides I think he would appreciate it if you were just yourself when you were around
him. People love you because you’re hard working, funny and authentic, and you’re
great with the clients. That’s why I love working with you and that’s why we’ve become
good friends.”

2. Seeing that my buddy wasn’t fully convinced, what do you guys think? Should we treat
our superiors differently from our co-workers? Do they deserve any more respect than
that of the janitor?
