1. Unit 57: Photography and
Photographic Practice
Research of other photographers
work (P1, M1, D1)
Photographer: Mattia Mongnetti
Theme or focus of images
In each photo the photographer created an eerie feel, and religious background.
Through the black and white effect he has used on the photos, It makes them more
dramatic and defines the dark areas and light to see more definition. The main focus
in every photograph is the building its self, as the background is completely black
which makes the detail, architectural designs and structure of the buildings to stand
out even more. I think the photographer has chosen to focus on churches and relate
to religion as they connote peace and serenity. All of the buildings clearly have a
historical architectural background, as they all have beautiful in depth designs on
each building, which draws the audience in and makes them interested in the
different eras they are from and looking at the different designs on each one.
Composition
Nothing else it in the shots for a reason. If there was anything else in the shot it would
take the attention away from the focus of the image, the buildings. He has decided
to take fit only the buildings in the shot almost in a close up way and very defined
which shows allot of detail. The very highly contrasted black and white create an
even more dramatic and intense vibe to the pictures that make it interesting for the
audience to look at.
Techniques used
I feel that he must have spent allot of time in post production creating the intensity
and depth of the black and white, so that the detail and buildings stand out and the
background simply is black.
Strengths & Weaknesses
I like how the photographer intrigues me personally at looking in depth at the photos
and really amazed by the way he’s shot the images and the actual beauty of the
buildings them self which he has enhanced. The photos have a quiet mysterious look
to them, although a weakness to the images are that he could have used more
2. effects as in blurring the background to the images to create an even greater and
prominent view of the buildings.
