1. State Employment Trends July 2011 National Association of REALTORS® Research Division Compilation of Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics
    2. Data Highlights

The US unemployment rate increased slightly from 9.1 percent in May to 9.2 percent in June but is down 0.3 percent from a year ago.

The states show a similar pattern. 39 states saw a decline in the unemployment rate in the last year while only 8 states saw a decline in the unemployment rate in this month. Louisiana, Colorado, and Kentucky had the largest declines. The unemployment rate was unchanged in 14 states in June.

In June, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and New Hampshire had the lowest unemployment rates—all under 5 percent. At the same time, 8 states had double-digit unemployment rates.

    3. More Highlights and Outlook

While 40 states had positive job growth in the last year, only 26 states and D.C. had positive job growth in June and the average change was zero—less than the historic average of national payroll job growth each month of 0.1% to 0.2%.

The greatest job growth in June was in Alaska while Tennessee had the largest job decline (as a share of previous payrolls). Alaska had the largest decline in May.

Moving forward, increasing labor force participation may keep the unemployment rate high even as jobs are being added. D.C. is an example of that in June

The following slides show state-level detail of unemployment rates and payroll employment.
