2. Sample Program Summary
The Big World Book Bash is a 2 day event that brings authors, bookmakers,
zinesters, small presses, artists and poets together in a venue where they can share
ideas, showcase their art and sell their products. The BWBB promotes greater
understanding of printing and book related arts through education, creation and
exhibition for a broad and diverse community. In three years BWBB has become a
home for poets, small presses and book artists in Jackson Heights. Partners in the
printed word, both the BWBB and the NYSCALTAP expand the vibrant literary
community in Queens. By creating a literary space where different artists can come
together the BWBB has become a touchstone for the national and local literary
communities. The support that the BWBB and the NYSCALTAP provide one another
exemplifies a symbiotic relationship between a dynamic community and a large
scale event with broad appeal. The event staff consists of 1) an
Organizer/Coordinator who is responsible for website maintenance, design,
fundraising, vendor liaising, logistical operations, volunteer coordination, press
releases and promotional materials. The O/C is an artist and an author with over 10
years experience organizing and curating artistic events; 2) a Website Consultant
who is responsible for website hosting, information architecture, file hosting and
creative problem solving. The WC has over 12 years experience as a web designer
and website consultant; 3) a Program Director who advises on marketing and
development for the project, helps coordinate scheduling and executes
administrative tasks. The PD is also responsible for liaising with poets, artists, and
local venues regarding coordinated events. All other personnel will be volunteers
working at the event. Revenue will be generated via vendor table fees, sponsorships
from local companies and organizations, and in-kind donations of goods and
services. Our grant request will help cover marketing costs and honoraria for
presenters at the event, readings and workshops. The audience for the BWBB
represents a diverse cross-section of race, gender, sexual orientation, class and age.
The target population are 18-65 year olds with literary and artistic interests. The
BWBB is unique in that it provides a forum for oft-marginalized authors and artists
whose work is not the primary impetus for any other book-related event in Queens.
The BWBB uses its website as the primary medium for logistical operations. It
3. provides critical information about the event, allows users to apply online to
become a vendor or sign up for a mailing list that sends out reminders about the
upcoming event. The website is maintained and updated on a daily basis. In
addition to the website, the BWBB utilizes print media, radio advertisements, social
networking sites, word of mouth and the email list of a number of other Queens
literary organizations; all told, reaching over 5000 people weekly and over 20,000
people per month. The event is evaluated based on audience size and diversity and
number of vendors. Year one brought in 65 vendors and 1200 visitors. Year 2
brought in 90 vendors and 1200-1500 visitors. Year 3 brought in 100 vendors and
2000 visitors. Our goal for this year is to host over 175 artists and 5000-6000
visitors. Our greatest challenge is to address the effects of technology on the written
word and the nature of writing itself.
