Why this module?
» For some students planning is through an Individual
Education Plan (IEP)
» An IEP draws on knowledge from the student and those
who know them the best
» Identify ways the IEP process can support students to be
actively involved in decision-making about their learning.

» Details additional
teaching strategies
» Shows how the school
programme is adapted
» Sets goals that the
whole team agrees are
a priority
» Include goals for the
adults, too.

Who does what in the IEP process?
» Collaborative decision making
» Specific roles need to be clarified and agreed
» Teachers have full responsibility for learning and
behaviour for all their students
» Teachers’ aides complement and support the teacher.

» Effective teaching involves students in decisions about
their learning
» Participating in their IEP gives students a say in their
learning. It can:
– motivate them
– build confidence
– build independence.

Students participating in their IEP
» Means different things for different students:
– taking part in conversations and meetings
– using assistive technology
– writing or recording
ideas
– family/whānau
providing information.

» It’s not just about what happens at IEP meetings
» Students need access to their IEPs in a format to suit,
eg:
– written in the everyday language of the student
– represented visually using pictures or symbols
– audio recording
– accessed electronically.
