2. There may be a time where you want to get
a bricklaying job done by yourself. Whether
you are making a flower bed box or building
a house, check out this guide for the basic
steps!
3. Before you get started, you want to make
sure you have your basics covered:
Bricklaying tools
Mortar/cement
Bricks
Leveler
String
4. Prep the area in which you are working. That
means you want to level the ground. Dig about 10-
12 inches deep and set up a straight string to make
sure your bricks will be aligned.
Apply a layer of about 3-inches of gravel or
crushed stone into the area and level.
After the gravel and stone is in place, apply a
1-inch layer of coarse sand on top.
Pour a 1-inch thick layer of cement on top
and allow it to dry for 24 hours before you
begin bricklaying.
5. After you have waited
24 hours for the 1st
layer of cement to dry,
you can begin laying
bricks. Make sure after
each layer you place
down, add a 1-inch
layer of mortar. You
can use bricklaying
tools to even out the
mortar for a smooth,
clean look between
layers. NOTE: be sure
you stager each layer
of brick.
6. As the mortar begins
to set, make sure you
strike the head and
bed joints. Use a
‘jointer’ or ‘joint
striker’ to rub it
along the mortar
joint between your
bricks. This helps the
mortar set with an
even finish.
7. Be sure after each layer, use a leveler. You
want to make sure that the bricks are
perfectly aligned so it is structurally sound.
Wipe away excess mortar that is not in the
joints because it’ll take away from the bricks
overall appearance.
Wear gloves when bricklaying because
cement can irritate the skin and be
extremely difficult to wash off if it hardens.
