In ancient time, all humans did not have any ways to be communicating with each other. However, over time, humans started to think about how they communicate with each other, and then, they created the language. Mother Tongue written by Bill Bryson explains the characteristics and information of many languages. One of the chapter talks about English as the global language. Since English becomes the universal language, there would be possible advantages and disadvantages, such as much easier to communicate with others, but people have to learn one more language in their educations.
First of all, it is much easier to list the advantages of English as the global language. Since English becomes the global language, people do not worry about the different characteristics between their home languages. Sometimes, there would be some troubles caused by miscommunications by two different language speakers, but they do not need any worry about it anymore because everyone can speak English as the global language, likewise if business partners speak different language, so person needs to study his partner’s language first, and then start their businesses. There will be no need to worry about communication. Even though people go to other countries which spoken different languages, there should be English subscriptions for every single advertisements, maps, and transportation systems. Therefore, people can visit to the countries where they have not gone easily.
Though there would be some disadvantages since English became the global language. Even it will effective for developed countries, but how about rural areas which do not even have school to teach English. The result will be that it works for countries hose called as developed countries because they can put many English educational projects in school, so those countries develop more for sure. However, undeveloped countries or the poor countryside of a huge country do receive its bad effects. If they cannot get enough education of English, there would be no way other countries can help. Thus, the world’s gap of wealth and poor get bigger and will be impossible to fix in someday. Therefore, the world would change for those people, who live in rural areas.
In conclusion, there are good effects for developed countries but no profits for poor countries. If English becomes the universal global language the wealth gap between developed and undeveloped countries will be bigger. Language is created for communicating with other people, so there will be more advantages to choose one language as the global language, but people must think carefully to choose a language which will be the world’s common language forever.
